Free account, 1 worksheets a week. No card.

Six Valentine math worksheets for the week of February 14, when a class wants real practice that still feels like part of the celebration. Each sheet takes a skill from the kindergarten to second grade curriculum (counting to 10, adding and subtracting within 20, comparing two groups, repeating patterns, odd and even numbers) and draws it with hearts, Valentine cards, roses, candy hearts, cupcakes and love letters. There are no cupids and no licensed characters. Outlines are bold and the color is flat, so the pages print well in color or black and white, and every PDF has its answer key on page 2.

What's in this set

  1. Count the hearts. Ten boxes with 1 to 10 red hearts each, laid out in rows of five. Count and write how many.
  2. Heart color by number. A 14 by 14 grid with four colors: a red heart with a pink heart inside and a purple outline on white. Number recognition to 4 and careful coloring; the key shows the finished heart.
  3. Sweetheart facts to 20. Twenty-four mixed addition and subtraction facts with answers up to 20, one Valentine picture per row.
  4. How many more? Eight comparison problems: two rows of pictures (six hearts over five cards), write both counts, then how many more are in the bigger row. This is subtraction as comparison, the version children find hardest.
  5. Valentine patterns. Eight repeating patterns of hearts, cards, roses and candy hearts (AB, ABB, AAB, ABC, ABCC and AABB). Say the pattern, then draw the two pictures that come next.
  6. Odd and even hearts. Sixteen numbered hearts from 1 to 30: color the odd ones pink and the even ones purple, then write each number in the odd or even box.

What students will practice

  • Counting sets to 10 and writing numerals (K.CC.B.5)
  • Comparing two groups and finding the difference (K.CC.C.6, 1.OA.A.1)
  • Addition and subtraction fluency within 20 (1.OA.C.6, 2.OA.B.2)
  • Recognising, extending and naming repeating patterns
  • Odd and even numbers to 30 (2.OA.C.3)
  • Number recognition and fine motor control on the color by number grid

Teaching tips and common mistakes

How to use these worksheets

Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter; print page 1 for children and keep page 2 to mark. Count the hearts, color by number and patterns suit kindergarten and first grade; facts to 20, how many more and odd and even suit first and second grade.

  • Count the hearts. The rows of five let children count "five and two more" instead of one by one. Ask early finishers to write the number word under each box.
  • Heart color by number. Only four colors, so this is the easiest color by number on the site. Start with the 4s (the purple outline) so the heart shape appears first and children can predict the rest.
  • Sweetheart facts to 20. Use as a two-minute warm-up each day of Valentine's week, or as a partner quiz: one reads, one answers, both write.
  • How many more? Have children draw a line from each picture in the short row to one in the long row, then count the pictures left over. That leftover is the difference, and it is the picture they need for 6 minus 5 later.
  • Valentine patterns. Insist that children say the pattern aloud before drawing (heart, rose, rose, heart, rose, rose). Naming the unit is the skill; the drawing is just the record.
  • Odd and even hearts. Children who are unsure should look only at the last digit: 23 is odd because 3 is odd. The two boxes at the bottom are a quick check that every heart was sorted.

Making it a Valentine's lesson

  • Candy heart math. A small bag of candy hearts per child turns count the hearts and how many more into hands-on work: sort by color, count each pile, find the difference.
  • Pattern hearts. The patterns sheet leads naturally into paper heart chains in a repeating color pattern for the classroom door.
  • Display. Finished color by number hearts mounted on purple paper make a quick corridor display for the second week of February.

Common issues to watch for

  • Answering "how many" instead of "how many more". Children often write the bigger number in the difference box. The matching-lines strategy above fixes this.
  • Losing the pattern unit. On ABB and ABCC rows children sometimes continue with AB. Ask them to circle each repeat of the unit before drawing.
  • Odd and even by the first digit. Some children call 21 odd and 12 odd too, because they look at the 1. Point to the ones digit every time until the habit sets.

Frequently asked questions

What age are these Valentine math worksheets for?

Kindergarten to second grade, roughly ages 5 to 8. Count the hearts, color by number and patterns suit kindergarten and first grade; facts to 20, how many more and odd and even are first and second grade work.

Do the worksheets include answer keys?

Yes. Every PDF has two pages: the worksheet and the same page with the answers filled in. The color by number key is the finished heart in color.

Can I print them in black and white?

Yes. Every picture is drawn with a solid black outline, so the sheets stay clear on a mono printer. The color by number key names each color as well as showing it, and the odd and even sheet tells children which color to use.

Are there cupids or characters on the sheets?

No. The set uses hearts, Valentine cards, roses, candy hearts, cupcakes and love letters drawn for this site. There are no cupids and no licensed characters, so the sheets work for any class that marks Valentine's Day as a friendship day.

Is this set free for classroom use?

Yes, for non-commercial educational use: a class set, a homeschool group or a family table are all fine.

More practice

The heart tracing worksheets are the pre-writing partner to this set for the youngest children. The repeating patterns worksheets go further with the AB and ABC patterns, and the count and color worksheets, ten frame worksheets, addition worksheets and subtraction worksheets cover the same skills without the theme. The color by number worksheets have more grid pictures in the same style, and the Christmas math worksheets use the same six formats for December.
