A fact family is three numbers and the four facts they make: 3, 4 and 7 give 3 + 4 = 7, 4 + 3 = 7, 7 − 3 = 4 and 7 − 4 = 3. Children who see facts in families learn subtraction as the undoing of addition instead of as a separate list, and later learn division the same way from multiplication. These eight worksheets use the two classic layouts, the triangle (whole on top, parts below) and the house (three numbers on the roof, four facts inside), moving from sums within 10 through sums within 20 to the multiplication tables from 2 to 10. Every sheet with answers has a key on page 2, and the last sheet is a blank template for any numbers you choose.

Teaching tips and common mistakes

How to use these worksheets

Say the facts out loud as they are written; the rhythm ("three plus four is seven, four plus three is seven...") is half of the learning. One sheet a day is plenty.

  • Triangles within 10 and 20. Point to the top number and say "this is the whole". Cover it with a finger: the two parts are left, so the parts add up to it. Cover a part: the whole minus the other part gives it. Then write the four facts.
  • Find the missing number. The rule is on the sheet: missing top, add the parts; missing part, subtract. Have the child say which case each triangle is before writing.
  • Fact family houses. Same idea, different picture. Some children prefer the house because the four facts line up like a list.
  • Multiplication triangles. Now the top is a product and the bottom numbers are factors. The turnaround fact (4 × 3 for 3 × 4) is the one children skip; make sure all four appear.
  • From one fact. This is the sheet that shows the payoff: one known fact gives three more for free. Time it and watch the speed grow over a week.
  • Blank houses. Let the child choose the three numbers. Choosing numbers that do not belong together (say 3, 5 and 9) and finding out why is a useful conversation.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Subtracting the whole from a part. "3 − 7" appears when the child is copying positions rather than thinking. Go back to covering the numbers with a finger.
  • Writing the same fact twice. 3 + 4 and 4 + 3 are two facts; 3 + 4 written twice is not. Check that each fact starts with a different number or sign.
  • Mixing operations. On the multiplication sheets the signs are × and ÷ only; a stray plus means the child has slipped back to the addition pattern.
  • Racing. Twelve triangles are 48 facts. If the writing gets sloppy halfway, stop and finish tomorrow.

Frequently asked questions

What grade are fact family worksheets for?

Kindergarten and grade 1 for the triangles within 10 (K.OA.3, 1.OA.4), grade 1 and 2 for within 20 and the missing number sheets (1.OA.6, 2.OA.2), and grade 3 for the multiplication and division families (3.OA.6). The blank template works at any level.

Why teach subtraction with fact families?

Because every subtraction fact is an addition fact turned around, so a child who knows 6 + 8 = 14 does not need to memorize 14 − 8 separately. The same is true for division and multiplication. Fact families halve the number of things to remember.

Do the worksheets have answer keys?

Yes, seven of the eight have the four facts (or the missing number) printed on page 2. The blank template has nothing to mark.

What is the difference between fact families and number bonds?

A number bond shows one whole split into two parts (a picture of the relationship); a fact family lists the four equations that relationship produces. Our number bonds worksheets come first, these sheets turn the bonds into written facts.

More practice

Before fact families: number bonds and doubles addition. Alongside them: addition and subtraction worksheets for practice, the 2 times table and the multiplication chart for the multiplication sheets, and division facts once the families are known. To put the facts to work, try the math word problems worksheets and, for a different kind of number line, the elapsed time worksheets.
