Five Thanksgiving math worksheets for the short week before the holiday, when a class needs real practice that still feels like a treat. Each sheet takes a skill from the kindergarten to second grade curriculum (counting to 10, comparing two groups, adding and subtracting within 20, repeating patterns) and draws it with turkeys, pumpkin pies, corn cobs, fall leaves and acorns. Outlines are bold and the color is flat, so the pages print well in color or black and white, and every PDF has its answer key on page 2.

What's in this set

  1. Thanksgiving counting. Eight boxes with 3 to 10 pictures each, laid out in rows of five. Count and write how many.
  2. Turkey color by number. A 14 by 14 grid with six colors: brown body, orange, red and yellow tail feathers, sky blue and green grass. Number recognition to 6 and careful coloring; the key shows the finished turkey.
  3. Feast facts to 20. Twenty-four mixed addition and subtraction facts with answers up to 20, one Thanksgiving picture per row.
  4. How many more? Eight comparison problems: two rows of pictures (eight turkeys over two pies), write both counts, then how many more are in the bigger row. This is subtraction as comparison, the version children find hardest.
  5. Fall patterns. Eight repeating patterns of leaves, acorns, corn, pies and turkeys (AB, ABB, AAB, ABC, ABCC and AABB). Say the pattern, then draw the two pictures that come next.

What students will practice

  • Counting sets to 10 and writing numerals (K.CC.B.5)
  • Comparing two groups and finding the difference (K.CC.C.6, 1.OA.A.1)
  • Addition and subtraction fluency within 20 (1.OA.C.6, 2.OA.B.2)
  • Recognising, extending and naming repeating patterns
  • Number recognition to 6 and fine motor control on the color by number grid

How to use these worksheets

Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter; print page 1 for children and keep page 2 to mark. Counting, color by number and patterns suit kindergarten and first grade; facts to 20 and how many more suit first and second grade.

  • Thanksgiving counting. The rows of five let children count "five and three more". Ask early finishers to write the number word or draw one more.
  • Turkey color by number. Six colors is more than most color by number grids, so read the key together first. Start with the 1s (the brown body) so the shape appears early and children can predict the rest.
  • Feast facts to 20. Use as a two-minute warm-up on each day of Thanksgiving week, or as a partner quiz: one reads, one answers, both write.
  • How many more? Have children draw a line from each picture in the short row to one in the long row, then count the pictures left over. That leftover is the difference, and it is the picture they need for 8 minus 2 later.
  • Fall patterns. Insist that children say the pattern aloud before drawing (leaf, acorn, acorn, leaf, acorn, acorn). Naming the unit is the skill; the drawing is just the record.

Making it a Thanksgiving lesson

  • Gratitude and counting. After the counting sheet, children draw their own box of five things they are thankful for and label it with the numeral.
  • Pattern hunt. The patterns sheet leads naturally into making paper chains or place cards in a repeating color pattern for the class table.
  • Display. Finished color by number turkeys mounted on brown paper make a quick corridor display for the last week of November.

Common issues to watch for

  • Answering "how many" instead of "how many more". Children often write the bigger number in the difference box. The matching-lines strategy above fixes this.
  • Losing the pattern unit. On ABB and ABCC rows children sometimes continue with AB. Ask them to circle each repeat of the unit before drawing.
  • Mixing up the sign on the facts sheet. Circle every minus sign first if this is a habit in your class.

Frequently asked questions

What age are these Thanksgiving math worksheets for?

Kindergarten to second grade, roughly ages 5 to 8. Counting, color by number and patterns suit kindergarten and first grade; facts to 20 and how many more are first and second grade work.

Do the worksheets include answer keys?

Yes. Every PDF has two pages: the worksheet and the same page with the answers filled in. The color by number key is the finished turkey in color.

Can I print them in black and white?

Yes. Every picture is drawn with a solid black outline, so the sheets stay clear on a mono printer. The color by number key names each color as well as showing it.

Do the pictures show anything other than food and fall?

No. The set uses a cartoon turkey, pumpkin pie, corn, leaves and acorns. There is no historical content, so the sheets work for any class that marks Thanksgiving or simply the fall season.

Is this set free for classroom use?

Yes, for non-commercial educational use: a class set, a homeschool group or a family table are all fine.

More practice

The repeating patterns worksheets go further with the AB and ABC patterns on the fall sheet. For counting and adding without the theme, see the count and color worksheets, the ten frame worksheets and the addition worksheets. The color by number worksheets have more grid pictures in the same style.
