A winter break packet that one teacher can hand out to a whole school, or one family can print for children in different grades. The eight pages are split into bands: a cover sheet and a reading log that every child uses, then two pages each for kindergarten to first grade, second to third grade and fourth to fifth grade. Each band gets one arithmetic page and one page that is a little more fun (a word search, a reading passage, picture counting), so the packet is light enough to finish over two weeks of break without turning the holidays into homework. Every math and reading page has its answer key on page 2 of the PDF, pictures are drawn with bold black outlines so the pages print cleanly in black and white, and the theme is snow and winter rather than any one holiday.
What's in this set
- Winter break packet cover sheet. Name, grade and teacher lines, a checklist of the seven pages with their grade band and a done box, a note for families explaining how to pick pages, and two reflection prompts. Eight winter pictures to color as pages are finished.
- Winter count and write (K to grade 1). Eight boxes of 3 to 10 snowflakes, mittens, snowmen, hats, trees and cocoa mugs laid out in rows of five. Count and write how many.
- Snowflake addition and subtraction to 10 (K to grade 1). Twenty-four mixed facts within 10 in three columns, one snowflake per row.
- Winter facts to 20 and 2-digit addition (grades 2 to 3). Part A is twelve mixed addition and subtraction facts within 20. Part B is eight 2-digit addition problems written in columns: the first four need regrouping, the last four do not.
- Winter word search (grades 2 to 3). Twelve words (snowflake, blizzard, mittens, snowman, icicle, winter, frost, scarf, cocoa, skate, boots, sled) hidden in a 12 by 12 grid in every direction, with a picture beside each word in the list.
- Winter multiplication and division facts (grades 4 to 5). Thirty-six mixed facts with factors from 2 to 12, alternating multiply and divide, in three columns.
- Read and respond: How Animals Get Through Winter (grades 4 to 5). A 161-word nonfiction passage about migration, hibernation and adaptation (Arctic terns, groundhogs, bears, snowshoe hares, chickadees) with two multiple choice questions, one short answer and one "why do you think" question.
- Winter break reading log. Ten rows for date, book title, minutes and parent initials, a total minutes box, a favorite book line and ten snowflakes to color, one for every 20 minutes read.

How to use these worksheets
Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter. The cover sheet, the reading log and the two pages for your grade band make a four-page packet; print the whole set if the packet is for a family with children in several grades. Keep page 2 of each PDF for marking, or send it home so families can check work together.
- Cover sheet. Have children fill in their name and grade before the break and tick the two pages they are responsible for, so the packet already has a plan when it goes home.
- Winter count and write. The rows of five let children count "five and three more". Early finishers can write the number word or draw one more picture in the box.
- Snowflake facts to 10. Three columns of eight; suggest one column a day. Children who still count on fingers should be allowed to: fluency within 10 comes from repetition, not from banning the strategy.
- Facts to 20 and 2-digit addition. Part A is a warm-up for Part B. Ask children to circle the ones column before adding so they notice when the ones make 10 or more; the check line at the bottom reminds them what to do with the extra ten.
- Winter word search. Words run in all eight directions, which is a step up from the across-and-down puzzles most second graders have seen. Suggest finding the longest words (snowflake, blizzard) first because they are easiest to spot.
- Multiplication and division facts. Thirty-six facts is a sensible two-minute timing for a fifth grader and a two-sitting job for a fourth grader. The facts alternate, so children must read the sign each time rather than switching into one mode.
- Read and respond. Ask for the sentence in the passage that proves each answer. Question 4 (why does a chickadee eat so much) needs two facts from the text joined together, which is the inference skill fourth and fifth grade tests look for.
- Reading log. Ten rows match a two-week break with weekends off. Anything counts: being read to, comics, audiobooks followed in the book, recipes. The snowflake row at the bottom turns minutes into a visible total.
Putting the packet together
- Staple order. Cover, the band pages, reading log last so it sits on top when the packet is turned over on the fridge.
- Returning it. Collect packets on the first day back and spend ten minutes going over the answer keys as a class; the point of the packet is the review conversation, not a grade.
- Differentiation. A strong second grader can take the grade 4-5 word search and reading page; a first grader who is not yet fluent within 10 can do the counting page twice.
Frequently asked questions
What grades is this winter break packet for?
Kindergarten to fifth grade. The cover sheet and reading log suit everyone; the other six pages are marked for K to grade 1, grades 2 to 3 and grades 4 to 5, two pages each. Pick the band you need or print all eight for a mixed-age family.
Do the pages have answer keys?
Yes. Every math page, the word search and the reading page have the answers on page 2 of the PDF. The cover sheet and reading log have no key.
Is the packet tied to Christmas or another holiday?
No. The pictures are snowflakes, mittens, snowmen, winter hats, evergreen trees, sleds, penguins and hot cocoa, so the packet works for any school's winter break.
How long should the packet take?
About 15 minutes a day for a week: one math page split over two or three sittings, the word search or reading page over two more, and a few minutes of reading each day for the log. It is meant to keep skills warm, not to add new ones.
Can I print it in black and white?
Yes. Every picture has a solid black outline and the answer boxes are dashed, so the pages stay clear on a mono printer. The cover sheet pictures are drawn as outlines on purpose so children can color them.
