A heart is the first shape many children want to draw, and it is harder than it looks: two curves, a dip, a point, and the two halves have to match. These seven heart tracing worksheets take it in steps. Every heart has a start dot in the dip at the top and an arrow pointing left, so children learn one stroke: down the left side to the point, up the right side, back to the dot. The sheets go from nine big hearts to sixteen small ones, then dots instead of dashes, rows that get longer and smaller, hearts hidden in pictures to color, and a last page where the guide fades to nothing. Print them for Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, or any week a child is stuck on hearts.

How to use these worksheets

Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter. One sheet a day is plenty. Use a crayon or a thick pencil for the large hearts and a normal pencil from sheet 2 on.

  • Trace 9 large hearts. Say the stroke together: "start at the dip, down and round to the point, up and round, back to the dip". Trace one in the air, then on the page. The draw box at the bottom is for after the tracing, not instead of it.
  • Trace 16 small hearts. Smaller hearts need a smaller movement from the fingers rather than the whole arm. If the hearts turn into blobs, go back to the large sheet for a day.
  • Hearts big to small. Ask the child which row was hardest. Usually the tiniest row, because the point at the bottom needs a precise stop.
  • Dot-to-dot hearts. The dots are farther apart than dashes, so the child has to decide the curve between them. Start at the big dot.
  • Rows of hearts. Read each row like a line of writing, left to right. This is pre-writing practice: the hand travels across the page in the direction it will later write.
  • Hearts all around us. Trace first, color second. Talk about where else hearts appear: cards, stickers, cookies, the shape your hands make.
  • Draw your own hearts. Do the four rows in order. If row 4 falls apart, put a faint heart in one box with a yellow highlighter and try again.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • A heart with no point. The pencil rounds the bottom. Say "stop at the bottom, then change direction".
  • Lopsided halves. One lobe is much bigger. Have the child trace the left half, pause at the point, look at the right half before continuing.
  • Starting at the bottom. Not wrong, but the top-dip start makes the two halves easier to match. Point at the dot.
  • Not closing the shape. The line stops short of the dip. "All the way home to the dot."

Frequently asked questions

What age are heart tracing worksheets for?

Ages 3 to 6. Sheets 1 and 2 (large and small hearts) suit preschool; big to small, dot-to-dot and rows suit ages 4 to 5; the draw-your-own page suits kindergartners who can already trace neatly.

Which shapes should a child trace before hearts?

Circles and ovals, because a heart is two curves. Children who can trace a circle smoothly can usually manage the large hearts. Corners come next: squares, triangles and diamonds.

Are these Valentine's Day worksheets?

They work for Valentine's Day, but nothing on the sheets mentions the holiday, so they can be used all year. The trace-and-color page has a love letter, a balloon and a cookie among its six pictures.

Can I reuse the sheets?

Yes. Laminate a sheet or put it in a plastic sleeve and trace with a dry-erase marker. The PDFs are free for home and classroom use.
