- Start with sums to 10, using objects if needed (fingers, blocks, counters). Once your child can add any two numbers that sum to 10 without counting objects, they're ready for sums to 20. Don't rush past sums to 10 — these facts are used constantly in regrouping later.
- Teach mental strategies, not just memorization. "Making a ten" is the most powerful: to solve 8 + 5, take 2 from the 5 to make 8 into 10, then add the remaining 3: 10 + 3 = 13. This strategy works for every addition problem and builds real number sense.
- For multi-digit addition, use graph paper or turn lined paper sideways so ones, tens, and hundreds columns stay aligned. Misalignment is the top cause of errors. Write the numbers in neat columns BEFORE adding — taking time to set up properly saves time correcting mistakes.

- Adding from left to right: The standard algorithm works right to left (ones first, then tens). Some students try left to right and then can't handle carrying. Always start with the ones column.
