Make a worksheet like this for your class
The 5 sheets above are fixed. The generator writes a new shapes flashcards worksheet for your grade, with the question types and count you choose, in about 20 seconds. Pick a grade to start:
What you get
- A fresh set of questions on shapes flashcards, not a copy of the sheets above
- Multiple choice, fill in the blanks, true or false, open ended
- Answer key and print-ready PDF with Pro
Free account, 3 worksheets a week. No card.
These five flashcards each show one large, solid-colored shape with its name in big print underneath: a green circle, a teal triangle, a purple rectangle, an orange rhombus and a red octagon. They are designed for the wall and the carpet, not the desk: full A4 or Letter size, one shape per page, no clutter, so a child at the back of the room can still see the shape clearly.
What's in this set
- Rectangle (purple), drawn tall so children see that a rectangle does not have to be wider than it is high.
- Rhombus (orange), the "diamond" most children already know by the wrong name.
- Octagon (red), the stop-sign shape, with eight clearly countable sides.
- Triangle (teal), an equilateral triangle sitting on its base.
- Circle (green).
Each card has a pencil-pattern border and the name in a plain sans-serif font that matches early-reading books. Print on card, laminate, and they will last a school year of daily use.
What students will practice
- Naming five common 2D shapes on sight (Common Core K.G.A.2; EYFS shape, space and measure)
- Counting sides and corners as a way of checking a name, especially for the octagon and rhombus
- Reading shape words as sight vocabulary; the cards double as word-wall entries
- Using the correct word "rhombus" for the shape usually called a diamond
- Recognizing a shape regardless of color, once you have asked "Is a red circle still a circle?"

How to use these flashcards in class
- Carpet time drill (3 minutes). Hold up a card, the class names it, you turn to the next. Vary the order every day. After a week, cover the name with your hand and ask again.
- Shape of the week. Pin one card to the math wall on Monday. Children bring or draw examples of that shape from home and stick them around the card. The octagon week always produces stop signs; the rhombus week produces kites and playing-card diamonds.
- Shape hunt. Give small groups one card each and five minutes to find three things in the room that match. The rectangle group finds doors, books and windows within seconds; the octagon group learns that some shapes are rare, which is itself a useful conversation.
- Matching with the 3D solids. Once children know these five, put the circle card next to a ball and a tin, and the rectangle card next to a cereal box. The 3D shapes worksheets continue this into cube, sphere, cylinder and cone.
- Sides and corners. For kindergarten, tape the cards to the board and have children come up and count sides with a pointer: circle 0, triangle 3, rectangle 4, rhombus 4, octagon 8. Write the number under each card.
Printing tips
- Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter card (160 to 200 gsm). Ordinary paper curls when held up daily.
- Print two copies to make a matching or memory game: shape to shape, or shape to name once you trim the name off one set.
- For a table-top version, print at 50% (two per page) and cut.
Common mistakes to watch for
- "Diamond" for rhombus. Accept "diamond" the first week, then model the word rhombus every time. Explain that a rhombus is a pushed-over square with four equal sides.
- Only recognizing the "standard" orientation. Turn the triangle card upside down and ask if it is still a triangle. Many four-year-olds say no. Rotate every card during drill.
- Calling the rectangle a square. Ask children to compare the long sides with the short sides using their fingers.
Frequently asked questions
What age are shapes flashcards for?
Ages 3 to 6. Three- and four-year-olds learn circle, triangle and rectangle first; rhombus and octagon are usually added in kindergarten. Older children with additional needs also use them as a vocabulary support.
Which shapes are included?
Circle, triangle, rectangle, rhombus and octagon, one per page. A square, oval, pentagon and hexagon are not in this set; for a square and oval, the tracing worksheets linked below show the shapes with dashed outlines.
Are the shapes in color?
Yes, each shape is a solid color (green circle, teal triangle, purple rectangle, orange rhombus, red octagon). They print acceptably in greyscale as five shades of gray with black outlines.
How should I introduce a new shape?
Show the card, say the name, trace the outline in the air together, count the sides, then find one real example in the room. Five minutes a day for a week is enough for most children to name it on sight.
