Using the tags

Which format for which job

Desk name plates are the first-week staple: two per Letter sheet, 8½ × 5½ in, printed on card. With the tent option on, the name appears upright on one half and upside down on the other, so the folded plate reads from the child's side and from the front of the room. Pick the biggest letters you can; a plate is read from across the classroom, not from the desk. The accent border in a different colour per child doubles as a table-group colour once you seat them.

Name tags at 8 per page (3⅜ × 2⅓ in) slip into Avery 5395 badge holders for the first day, open evening and field trips; the “Hello my name is” band makes them read as badges rather than labels. The 10-per-page size (3½ × 2 in) is the business-card grid, Avery 5371 or any pre-cut card stock, and is right for sticky tags on a jumper or a reading-group tent card.

Labels are for things, not people: 30 per page (2⅝ × 1 in, Avery 5160) for exercise books, pencil cases and tray fronts; 10 per page (4 × 2 in, Avery 5163) for folders, book boxes and coat pegs. Turn on “Repeat names to fill the sheet” when every child needs several, or type a list of subjects instead of names to label a set of books for one child.

Locker and cubby tags are 8 × 2½ in strips, four to a page, sized for the top of a cubby or a coat hook rail. Laminate them and they survive the year; the dots theme hides scuffs better than plain white.

Printing on label stock: every grid here is drawn in inches, centred on the sheet, which is how Avery lays its sheets out. Print from the browser at 100% (choose “Default” or “None” for margins and untick “Fit to page”), untick the cut lines so no dashes land on the sticker, and run one sheet on plain paper first to check the alignment against a label sheet held up to the light. On A4 the same inch grid is centred, so use plain paper and cut along the lines.

Name tags pair naturally with the first handwriting work of the year: a child who recognises their printed name on the desk is ready for the name tracing generator and the name tracing worksheets. For the rest of the wall, the word wall cards maker prints sight words in the same soft colours, and the handwriting worksheets cover letter formation once names are mastered.

How it works

How to make classroom name tags

Three steps from a class list to a stack of printed sheets.

  1. 1

    Paste the names

One per line, up to 60. Add a small line for the room, class or teacher if you want it on every tag.

  2. 2

    Pick a format and theme

Desk plates, 8 or 10 name tags, 30 or 10 labels, or locker strips. Plain, accent border or dots, one colour or a different colour per child.

  3. 3

    Print at 100%

Letter for Avery stock, or plain paper with cut lines on. Save as PDF from the print dialog to keep the set.

Yes. Paste up to 60 names, pick a format and a theme, and print or save as a PDF. No account, no watermark, no limit on sheets. Everything is laid out in your browser, so your class list is never uploaded.

The 30-per-page labels are 2⅝ × 1 in (Avery 5160 and compatibles), the 10-per-page labels are 4 × 2 in (Avery 5163), the 10-per-page name tags are 3½ × 2 in cards (Avery 5371) and the 8-per-page name tags are 3⅜ × 2⅓ in badge inserts (Avery 5395). The grids are drawn in exact inches and centred on US Letter, the way Avery centres them. Print at 100% with no "fit to page" scaling and untick cut lines when you print on label stock.

Each plate is half a Letter sheet, 8½ × 5½ in. With the tent option on, the name is printed upright on the lower half and upside down on the upper half; cut along the dashed line, fold on the dotted line and the plate stands on the desk reading correctly from both sides. Turn the tent option off for a flat plate to tape to a desk or a book box.

Yes. The letter size shrinks to fit the width of the tag, so "Christopher" and "Mia" both fill their label without wrapping or clipping. Hyphenated and double-barrelled names work the same way. On the smallest labels a very long name simply prints smaller.

Yes. The small line under each name takes anything up to 40 characters, such as "Room 12 · Mrs Patel" or "Year 2 Owls", and prints on every tag on the sheet. Tick "Repeat names to fill the sheet" to use every label on a part-filled sheet, for example two book labels per child.
