Six penguin worksheets for a winter animals unit or a January week when the class needs a theme. Each sheet takes a skill from the preschool to first grade curriculum (counting to 10, making 10 on a ten frame, adding and subtracting within 10, repeating patterns, pencil control, reading a short nonfiction text) and draws it with penguins, fish, ice blocks and snowflakes. Outlines are bold and the color is flat, so the pages print well in color or black and white, and every PDF with a right answer has its answer key on page 2.
What's in this set
- Penguin count and write. Eight boxes with 3 to 10 penguins, fish, ice blocks or snowflakes each, laid out in rows of five. Count and write how many.
- Penguin ten frames. Ten frames filled with 1 to 10 penguins. Write how many, then how many more penguins would make 10.
- Penguin addition and subtraction to 10. Twenty-four mixed facts with answers to 10, one penguin picture per fact, with the sign to check before each one.
- Penguin patterns. Eight repeating patterns of penguins, fish, ice blocks and snowflakes (AB, ABB, AAB, ABC, ABCC and AABB). Say the pattern, then draw the two pictures that come next.
- Penguin tracing. A dashed penguin outline in three sizes (one big, two medium, three small) with a start dot on each head, then the word penguin to trace twice and write once on handwriting lines.
- Penguin facts mini-read. A 68-word nonfiction passage in large print (penguins are birds that cannot fly, swim with paddle-like wings, live in the southern half of the world, keep warm with feathers and fat, eat fish), two multiple choice questions, one written answer and a drawing box.

How to use these worksheets
Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter; print page 1 for children and keep page 2 to mark. Counting, tracing and patterns suit preschool and kindergarten; ten frames, facts to 10 and the mini-read suit kindergarten and first grade.
- Penguin count and write. The pictures sit in rows of five, so children can count on from five instead of starting at one each time. Early finishers write the number word next to the numeral.
- Penguin ten frames. Ask children to say the pair out loud ("7 penguins and 3 more make 10") before writing. The empty cells are the answer to the second question, which is the point of a ten frame.
- Penguin addition and subtraction to 10. Use as a two-minute warm-up on each day of the week, or as a partner quiz. Insist that children circle every minus sign first if mixing up the sign is a habit.
- Penguin patterns. Children should say the pattern aloud before drawing (penguin, fish, fish, penguin, fish, fish). Naming the unit is the skill; the drawing is only the record.
- Penguin tracing. Big penguin first with the arm moving from the shoulder, then the smaller ones with the wrist. Trace the dashed word twice, then cover it and write it on the empty line.
- Penguin facts mini-read. Read it aloud once, then have children read it a second time with a finger under the words. Question 3 is answered in the text; the drawing box at the bottom is for early finishers.
Making it a penguin week
- Waddle and slide. After the mini-read, children act out the two ways penguins move on land, then write one sentence about each.
- Fish for the penguin. Cut paper fish, write a number on each and have children build the matching ten frame with counters.
- Pattern necklaces. The patterns sheet leads naturally into bead or paper-chain necklaces in a repeating color pattern.
Common issues to watch for
- Answering "how many" twice on the ten frame sheet. The second box asks how many more make 10; point to the empty cells.
- Losing the pattern unit. On ABB and ABCC rows children sometimes continue with AB. Ask them to circle each repeat of the unit before drawing.
- Choosing "yes" for "Can penguins fly?" because penguins are birds. Send children back to the first sentence of the passage.
Frequently asked questions
What age are these penguin worksheets for?
Preschool to first grade, roughly ages 4 to 7. Counting, tracing and patterns suit preschool and kindergarten; ten frames, facts to 10 and the mini-read are kindergarten and first grade work.
Do the worksheets include answer keys?
Yes, every sheet with a right answer has it on page 2: the counting, ten frame, facts, patterns and mini-read PDFs are all two pages. The tracing page is one page with no key.
Are the penguin facts accurate?
Yes. The passage keeps to well-established facts: penguins are birds, they cannot fly, their wings work as flippers for swimming, they live in the Southern Hemisphere with many species on or near Antarctica, they are kept warm by dense feathers and a layer of fat, and they eat fish.
Can I print them in black and white?
Yes. Every picture is drawn with a solid black outline, so the sheets stay clear on a mono printer. The tracing page uses grey dashes that print well on any printer.
Is this set free for classroom use?
Yes, for non-commercial educational use: a class set, a homeschool group or a winter animals table are all fine.
More practice
The ten frame worksheets continue making 10 without the theme, and the addition worksheets and subtraction worksheets have more facts to 10 and 20. The repeating patterns worksheets go further with AB and ABC patterns, the kindergarten reading comprehension worksheets have more short reads with questions, and the animal coloring pages are a quiet follow-on for the end of the day.
