The spindle box is the Montessori material that teaches two things at once: that a number can stand for a loose group of separate objects (not just a rod or a bar), and that zero means nothing at all. Two wooden boxes have ten compartments numbered 0 to 9; the child counts one spindle at a time into each compartment, bundles them with a band, and finds the 0 compartment stays empty. This set gives you the material on paper plus the recording work that follows it: printable boxes and spindles, count and draw sheets, a bundle-matching sheet, the cards and counters that come next in the sequence, odd and even, and a page that makes zero concrete.

Teaching tips and common mistakes

How to use these worksheets

Print the boxes and spindles on card, cut the spindles out (or use 45 craft sticks or straws) and do the real activity first. The worksheets are the paper step afterwards.

  • Printable spindle boxes. Fold a small lip along the bottom edge of each box, or glue the sheet inside a shallow box lid, so the spindles stand. Start at 1: "one", place one spindle. Then 2: "one, two". Count into the child's hand first, then into the compartment, then wrap a band around the bundle.
  • Count the spindles. Touch each spindle as you count. The empty compartment is the point of the sheet: "How many? None. We write 0."
  • Draw the spindles. Short vertical lines, side by side, like the real spindles standing in the box. Count the lines back afterwards. The check at the bottom (45 altogether) is for older children and adults.
  • Match the bundles. The red band is how spindles are bundled after counting, so children who have used the material recognize it. Count, then draw the line.
  • Cards and counters. The counters are laid in pairs, two by two, with a single one at the bottom when the number is odd. Count them and write the numeral on the card above. This is the next material after the spindle box.
  • Odd and even. Color the counters two at a time. A counter with no partner means the number is odd. Children discover the pattern (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) without being told.
  • Zero means none. Do the "bring me zero" game first: ask for zero spindles, the child brings nothing. Then the sheet: label the empty compartments, trace the zeros, and see that adding zero changes nothing.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Counting by looking, not touching. Young children skip or double-count. One finger on each spindle, one number per touch.
  • Skipping the 0 compartment. Children want to put something there. Ask "how many does the label say?" and let them leave it empty.
  • Drawing spindles in a heap. Lines side by side are countable; a scribble is not. Model one compartment first.
  • Calling 10 odd. On the counters sheet, 10 makes five full pairs. Check that the last row has two counters, not one.

Frequently asked questions

What age is the spindle box for?

About 4, after the number rods (quantity as length) and the sandpaper numerals (the symbols). The spindle box joins symbol to loose quantity and adds zero. Cards and counters follow at 4 to 4½.

Why are there exactly 45 spindles?

Because 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 = 45. When every compartment is filled correctly there are no spindles left over, so the material checks itself. That is why the draw-the-spindles sheet asks for 45 in total.

What does the spindle box teach that the number rods do not?

With the rods, "five" is one object of a certain length. With spindles, "five" is five separate things held together in the hand. Children need both ideas. The spindle box is also the first place zero appears, as an empty compartment with a label.

Do these worksheets include answer keys?

Five of the seven do (count the spindles, match the bundles, cards and counters, odd and even, zero means none), each on page 2 of its PDF. The printable boxes and the draw-the-spindles sheet have nothing to mark.

Can I make the material without printing?

Yes. Ten small boxes or an egg carton with the compartments numbered 0 to 9, plus 45 craft sticks, straws or pencils, is a complete spindle box. Use these sheets for the recording work afterwards.

More Montessori math

Before this: number rods and sandpaper numerals. After it: the bead stair, golden beads and, later, the addition strip board. The Montessori math worksheets page has the whole sequence with ages on one sheet, and the Montessori bead worksheets are the original set. Odd and even continues on the odd and even numbers worksheets; for more counting to 10, see the count and color worksheets and the number tracing worksheets.
