Six snowman worksheets for the weeks after the winter break, when a class wants a theme that is not a holiday and still needs real practice. Each sheet takes a skill from the preschool to first grade curriculum (counting to 10, adding within 10, ordering events, comparing size and quantity, recognising numbers, reading simple words) and draws it with snowmen, snowballs, mittens, top hats, scarves and snowflakes. Outlines are bold and the color is flat, so the pages print well in color or black and white, and every PDF with a right answer has its answer key on page 2.

What's in this set

  1. Snowman count and write. Eight boxes with 3 to 10 winter pictures each, laid out in rows of five. Count and write how many.
  2. Snowman addition to 10 with snowballs. Ten picture problems: two groups of snowballs side by side, with three boxes to write both addends and the sum. Every total is 10 or less.
  3. Build a snowman sequencing. Four pictures of a snowman being built (one ball, two balls, three balls, finished with hat and scarf), shown out of order. Number them 1 to 4, then finish the First, Next, Then, Last sentences.
  4. Snowman color by number. A 14 by 14 grid with six colors: white snow, sky blue background, black hat, orange nose, red scarf and brown stick arms. Number recognition to 6 and careful coloring; the key shows the finished snowman.
  5. Snowman size order and compare. Part 1: six groups of three snowmen to label 1, 2, 3 from smallest to biggest. Part 2: three pairs of snowmen with different numbers of buttons; count the buttons and circle the snowman with more (or fewer).
  6. Snowman word search. Ten easy words hidden across and down only in a 10 by 10 grid, each with a small picture next to it: snow, hat, scarf, carrot, cold, ice, coal, broom, mittens, winter.

What students will practice

  • Sequencing four events and using order words (first, next, then, last)
  • Comparing size (smallest, biggest) and quantity (more, fewer) (K.CC.C.6, K.MD.A.2)
  • Number recognition to 6 and fine motor control on the color by number grid
  • Letter recognition and left-to-right scanning on the word search

How to use these worksheets

Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter; print page 1 for children and keep page 2 to mark. Counting, color by number and the word search suit preschool and kindergarten; snowball addition, sequencing and the compare sheet suit kindergarten and first grade.

  • Snowman count and write. The pictures sit in rows of five, so a child who knows five can count on: "five, six, seven". Ask early finishers to circle the box with the most pictures.
  • Snowman addition to 10. Have children touch each snowball as they count the first group, write the number, then do the same for the second group before counting all of them together. The three boxes make the number sentence visible.
  • Build a snowman sequencing. Cut the four cards apart for a hands-on version, or do it as a class first: "Which picture has to come first? How do you know?" The sentence starters turn it into a short piece of procedural writing.
  • Snowman color by number. Six colors is more than most color by number grids, so read the key together first. Start with the 3s (the black hat) so the shape appears early and children can predict the rest.
  • Snowman size order and compare. For Part 1, ask children to point to the smallest before they write anything. For Part 2, have them write both button counts before circling; the word more or fewer is in capitals so they notice which one the sentence asks for.
  • Snowman word search. The words run across or down only and never backwards. Read the word list aloud first and have children trace each word with a finger before searching.

Making it a snowman week

  • Build a real one. If there is snow, build a snowman and photograph each stage; the sequencing sheet becomes a record of the class's own snowman.
  • Paper snowmen. Children cut three circles of different sizes and glue them in order, then add the number of buttons shown on a card. Instant size-order and counting practice.
  • Display. Finished color by number snowmen mounted on blue paper make a quick corridor display for January.

Common issues to watch for

  • Writing the bigger number for "fewer". On the compare sheet, children often circle the snowman with more buttons every time. Read the sentence together and underline the key word.
  • Counting the plus sign. On the addition sheet some children count the + as an object. Have them cover it with a finger while they count.
  • Skipping the middle step. On the sequencing sheet the two-ball and three-ball pictures look alike. Ask: "How many snowballs are in this picture?"

Frequently asked questions

What age are these snowman worksheets for?

Preschool to first grade, roughly ages 4 to 7. Counting, color by number and the word search suit preschool and kindergarten; snowball addition, sequencing and the size and compare sheet are kindergarten and first grade work.

Do the worksheets include answer keys?

Yes. Every PDF has two pages: the worksheet and the same page with the answers filled in. The color by number key is the finished snowman in color, and the word search key highlights every hidden word.

Can I print them in black and white?

Yes. Every picture is drawn with a solid black outline, so the sheets stay clear on a mono printer. The color by number key names each color as well as showing it.

Are there snowman tracing or handwriting pages?

The word search has ten short snowman words to find, and the sequencing sheet has four sentence starters to finish. For tracing the shapes of a snowman, the circle tracing worksheets linked below are the natural partner.

Is this set free for classroom use?

Yes, for non-commercial educational use: a class set, a homeschool group or a snow day at the kitchen table are all fine.

More practice

The circle tracing worksheets are the shapes a snowman is built from, and the count and color worksheets and addition worksheets continue the counting and adding without the theme. The greater than less than worksheets go further with more and fewer, and the winter coloring pages and Christmas math worksheets use the same snowy pictures.
