Eight winter worksheets for January, when the holiday themes are packed away and a preschool or kindergarten class still wants pictures on the page. Each sheet takes an early skill (counting to 10, matching, ten frames, ordering by size, repeating patterns, number recognition, beginning sounds, sorting and graphing) and draws it with snowflakes, mittens, snowmen, woolly hats, mugs of hot cocoa, sleds and penguins. Outlines are bold and the color is flat, so the pages print well in color or black and white, and every PDF has its answer key on page 2.
What's in this set
- Count the snowflakes 1 to 10. Ten boxes with 1 to 10 snowflakes each, laid out in rows of five. Count and write how many.
- Mitten matching. Six left mittens and six right mittens in mixed order, each pair sharing a pattern (stripes, dots, checks, zigzags, diagonals, stars). Draw a line from dot to dot to join the pairs.
- Winter ten frames. Ten frames filled with 1 to 10 mittens: write how many, then how many more make 10.
- Snowman size order. Three rows of five pictures (snowmen, mittens, hats) in mixed sizes. Write 1 to 5 from smallest to biggest, or cut the pictures out and line them up.
- Winter patterns. Eight repeating patterns of snowflakes, mittens, hats and cocoa mugs (AB, ABB, AAB and ABC). Say the pattern, then draw the two pictures that come next.
- Winter color by number: mitten. A 14 by 14 grid with four colors (sky blue, red, white, yellow) that reveals a red mitten with a yellow stripe on a snowy day. The key shows the finished picture.
- Winter beginning sounds. Six pictures (snow, mitten, hat, ice, sled, coat) with the first letter of each word missing and three letters to choose from. Circle the beginning sound and write it in the box.
- Winter I-spy count and graph. A winter scene of snowflakes, mittens, snowmen, hats and penguins. Count each kind, write the number and color one bar box for each one found.

How to use these worksheets
Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter; print page 1 for children and keep page 2 to mark. Mitten matching, size order and patterns suit preschool; the ten frames, beginning sounds and the graph are kindergarten work. Counting and color by number fit both.
- Count the snowflakes. The rows of five let children count "five and two more". Ask early finishers to circle the box with the most snowflakes and the box with the fewest.
- Mitten matching. Have children name the pattern aloud ("stripes") before they look for its partner. The dots at the end of each mitten give a clear place to start and stop the line.
- Winter ten frames. Children who struggle with "make 10" can touch each empty cell as they count up. Pair the sheet with real mittens or counters on a laminated frame.
- Snowman size order. Writing 1 to 5 is the quick version. For preschool, cut the five pictures out of one row and line them up on the table first, then glue or number them.
- Winter patterns. Insist that children say the pattern aloud before drawing (mitten, hat, hat, mitten, hat, hat). Naming the unit is the skill; the drawing is just the record.
- Winter color by number. Only four colors, so most children can read the key alone after one explanation. Start with the 2s (the red mitten) so the shape appears early.
- Winter beginning sounds. Say each picture name together first; some children will say "snowflake" for snow or "cube" for ice, so agree the word before anyone circles. Snow and sled both start with s, which is a useful talking point.
- Winter I-spy count and graph. Children cross off each picture as they count it. Then color the bar from the bottom up, one box per picture, and compare: which has the most, which the fewest, how many more snowflakes than snowmen.
Making it a winter lesson
- Mitten match-up. After the matching sheet, children design their own pair of patterned mittens on card, cut them out and hide one for a partner to find.
- Real snowflake counting. On a snowy day, count the snowflakes that land on a dark sleeve in ten seconds; then compare with the biggest box on the counting sheet.
- Display. Finished color by number mittens cut out and hung on a string make a January washing line across the classroom.
Common issues to watch for
- Counting the same picture twice on the I-spy scene. Crossing off each picture as it is counted fixes this.
- Writing the total instead of "how many more" on the ten frames. Point to the empty cells and ask "how many empty?".
- Losing the pattern unit. On ABB and AAB rows children sometimes continue with AB. Ask them to circle each repeat of the unit before drawing.
Frequently asked questions
What age are these winter worksheets for?
Preschool and kindergarten, roughly ages 3 to 6. Mitten matching, size order and patterns work for preschool; ten frames, beginning sounds and the count-and-graph sheet are kindergarten work. Counting to 10 and color by number suit both.
Do the worksheets include answer keys?
Yes. Every PDF has two pages: the worksheet and the same page with the answers filled in. The mitten matching key draws the lines, and the color by number key is the finished mitten in color.
Can I print them in black and white?
Yes. Every picture is drawn with a solid black outline and the mitten patterns are made of lines, dots and shapes rather than color, so the sheets stay clear on a mono printer. The color by number key names each color as well as showing it.
Are these January worksheets or Christmas worksheets?
January. The pictures are snowflakes, mittens, snowmen, hats, cocoa, sleds and penguins; there are no holiday symbols, so the set works from the first week back until the snow goes.
Is this set free for classroom use?
Yes, for non-commercial educational use: a class set, a homeschool group or a family table are all fine.
More practice
The winter coloring pages go with this set for a quiet finisher. For the same skills without the theme, see the count and color worksheets, the ten frame worksheets and the repeating patterns worksheets. The color by number worksheets have more grid pictures in the same style, the phonics worksheets continue the beginning sounds work, and the I spy worksheets have more count-the-scene pages.
