Kindergarten reading comprehension has one job: show the child that the words they can now sound out mean something. These eight worksheets keep the reading load tiny (three sentences a story, almost all CVC words plus a handful of sight words like the, is, on, has) so that every child who has started blending can read the text alone and spend their effort on the question. Questions are answered by circling, never by writing a sentence, and every sheet with answers has a key on page 2. The stories are about cats, buses, hens and bugs, drawn in the same simple pictures as our CVC words worksheets, so a child who has done those sheets recognizes the words and the pictures here.

How to use these worksheets
Print one sheet at a time. Ten minutes is a full session at this age. The child reads aloud; you listen for whether they are decoding or guessing from the picture.
- Read the story twice. First time to sound out, second time to understand. Only then look at the questions. Point to the sentence that holds the answer before circling.
- The story sheets (1 to 4). Questions go in story order and the answer choices are words the child can read. If a child cannot read a choice, read it to them: the skill being tested is understanding, not decoding the options.
- Read and circle the picture. The clues never name the object, so the child has to hold two facts together ("hot" and "in the sky"). Ask "how do you know?" after each circle.
- Yes or no? A quick check of literal understanding. Children who circle yes for "a cat can fly" are reading the words as a list, not a sentence; slow down and read it together.
- What happened first? Sequencing with pictures. Read the story, then find the picture for the first sentence, then the next. Say "first, next, last" as you number.
- Draw what you read. The drawing shows exactly what was understood: a red cat on a big box, or just a cat. Check color words and size words in the picture.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Answering from the picture, not the text. The icon shows a cat; the question asks where it sat. Cover the picture and ask again if needed.
- Circling the first choice. Make sure all three choices were read before the pencil moves.
- Losing the place. A finger under each word keeps three-sentence stories manageable. A strip of card under the line helps too.
- Guessing sight words. "The", "is", "has", "on" and "in" appear in every story. If they are not automatic yet, spend a week on the sight words worksheets first.
Frequently asked questions
What reading level are these kindergarten comprehension worksheets?
Early decodable text: CVC words (cat, sun, bus, hen, log), a few common sight words (the, is, on, has, in, a) and two or three story-specific words like yellow or school that an adult can supply. A child who can blend three-letter words and knows about 20 sight words can read them alone; a child who is not there yet can listen and answer the questions orally, which is still comprehension practice.
Do the worksheets have answer keys?
Yes. Seven of the eight (the four story sheets, circle the picture, yes or no, and sequencing) have the answers on page 2 of the PDF. Draw what you read is checked by looking at the drawing.
How many should a kindergartner do?
One sheet, one sitting. Two stories with six questions is a full session at five or six years old. Re-read favorite stories on other days; repeated reading of easy text builds fluency.
What comes after these?
Longer passages with four or five questions, then written answers. Our third grade reading comprehension worksheets show where the ladder leads; first and second grade sets are on the way. The reading passage generator writes a passage at any grade level on a topic you choose.
More early reading practice
The stories use the same words and pictures as the CVC words worksheets and the word families worksheets, and the sight words from the sight words worksheets. For the sounds behind the words, see the phonics worksheets and the short and long vowel worksheets. Children who want to write about the stories can use the handwriting worksheets.
