Teaching the clock
Which precision, which task, and when
Telling time is taught in layers, and a worksheet only helps when it sits on the layer the child is working on. The usual order is o’clock, then half past, then quarter past and quarter to, then five-minute intervals, then the minute. First grade typically covers hours and half hours, second grade reaches five minutes, and third grade adds elapsed time. Pick the precision to match and leave the harder times out until the easier ones are automatic.
Start with reading, then drawing. “Write the time shown” is recognition: the child reads where the hands point. “Draw the hands” is production and is noticeably harder, because the hour hand has to be placed between numbers once minutes are involved. The clocks here do that properly: at 6:30 the hour hand sits halfway from 6 to 7, which is exactly the thing children get wrong on their own drawings. Use the answer key to show it.
Matching suits early practice and mixed-ability groups, since the answers are on the page and the task is discrimination rather than recall. Digital to analogue is the bridge children need most now that most of the clocks they see are digital: copying 7:45 onto a blank face forces the “45 minutes means the big hand at 9” translation.
Elapsed time is where many children stall, so keep the interval friendly at first: a whole hour (only the hour hand moves), then 30 minutes, then 15, then 5 and 10. Reading the start time from a clock rather than a sentence keeps the task concrete. Pair it with a number line for the harder intervals.
Times in words matter in classrooms that teach “half past” and “quarter to” alongside digits. Switching the same sheet between digits and words is a cheap way to practise the vocabulary without re-teaching the clock. For 6, 9 or 12 clocks a page: six large clocks for the youngest children, nine as the everyday size, twelve for a quick check.
For ready-made practice, the telling time worksheets collection covers hours to five-minute intervals, and the skip counting worksheets build the counting by fives that reading minutes depends on. The math fact generator and visual schedule maker are the sibling free printables.
How it works
How to make a telling time worksheet
Three steps from a precision to clock worksheets with their answer key.
- 1
Choose the task and precision
Write the time, draw the hands, match, digital to analogue or elapsed time. Then the precision: hour, half hour, quarter hour, 5 minutes or 1 minute.
- 2
Set the sheet
6, 9 or 12 clocks a page, 1 to 3 pages, times in digits or words, the elapsed interval, and the answer key.
- 3
Print
Letter or A4. Worksheet pages print first and the answer key pages follow. Shuffle for a fresh set of times.

Yes. Pick the task and precision, print the worksheet and its answer key. No account, no watermark, no limit. The clocks are drawn in your browser as SVG, so hands sit at the exact angle for every time and print crisply at any size.
To the hour, half hour, quarter hour, 5 minutes and 1 minute. Hours run 1 to 12. Times are not repeated until every distinct time at that precision has been used, so a sheet to the hour shows all twelve hours before any repeat.
Write the time shown (clock with hands, blank line underneath); draw the hands (time printed, blank clock face); match (clocks on the left, shuffled times on the right); digital to analogue (a digital display to copy onto a blank clock); and elapsed time (read the clock, then work out the time 5 minutes to 2 hours later).
Yes. Tick "Times in words" and prompts and answers print as "half past six" or "quarter to ten". Minutes on the five-step print as "twenty-five past two"; a one-minute time such as 6:13 stays in digits because there is no natural phrase.
Yes. Each worksheet page gets a key page with the hands drawn and the times written in the same positions, so marking is a glance. Choose 6, 9 or 12 clocks a page and 1 to 3 pages; press Shuffle for a new set with the same settings; print on US Letter or A4.
