Six Groundhog Day worksheets for the first week of February, when a class wants to talk about shadows, winter and spring anyway. The set treats the holiday as what it is: a fun tradition, not a weather forecast. The passage says so plainly, the prediction graph turns the class into the groundhog, and the facts sheet is about the real animal (a woodchuck that hibernates, eats plants and lives in a burrow). Every picture is drawn with bold black outlines so the pages print well in black and white, and every sheet that has answers carries its key on page 2.
What's in this set
- Groundhog Day reading passage. Ninety words of nonfiction: February 2, the burrow, the shadow tradition (six more weeks of winter or an early spring), Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania, and the line that it is a tradition, not science. Three words to know (burrow, shadow, tradition), three multiple-choice questions and one written answer.
- Shadow or no shadow? Class prediction graph. Two tally boxes, a bar graph to 20 with one box per student to color, and three questions about the data (how many, how many, which had more and by how many).
- Groundhog facts: true or false? Eight statements about the animal and the day: woodchucks, hibernation, plants not meat, burrows, rodent not bird, February 2, what the shadow means, where Phil lives. Then rewrite one false sentence and draw a groundhog in its burrow.
- In what order? Sequencing. Four illustrated steps, mixed up: asleep in the burrow all winter, out of the burrow on February 2, looking for the shadow, the news. Number them 1 to 4, then write the story in order on four lines.
- Groundhog Day word search. Ten words across and down in a 12 by 12 grid: groundhog, shadow, winter, spring, burrow, February, weather, sunny, cloudy, sleep.
- My weather prediction. Check will or will not see its shadow, circle today's weather, check what the prediction means, explain the thinking on ruled lines, draw the groundhog and give it a name.
What students will practice
- Asking and answering questions about key details in an informational text (RI.K.1, RI.1.1, RI.2.1)
- Describing the connection between events in a text and retelling them in order (RI.K.3, RI.1.3)
- Organizing, representing and interpreting data with two categories (K.MD.B.3, 1.MD.C.4)
- Deciding whether statements are true, and correcting a false one in writing
- Spelling and letter-by-letter scanning of theme words (RF.1.3) on the word search
- Opinion writing with a reason (W.K.1, W.1.1) on the prediction page

Teaching tips and common mistakes
How to use these worksheets
Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter. Print page 1 for children and keep page 2 to mark. The passage and the true or false sheet suit grades 1 and 2 (or kindergarten as a read-aloud); the graph, sequencing, word search and prediction page work from preschool and kindergarten up with an adult reading the instructions.
- Reading passage. Read it aloud once before children read it themselves. Question 3 is the one that catches children out: seeing the shadow means more winter, which feels backwards. Act it out with a flashlight and a toy to make it stick.
- Shadow or no shadow? Do this on February 1. Each child makes one tally mark, the class counts, then everyone colors the same bars so the graph matches. On February 2, check the real result and talk about whether more votes made the prediction more likely to be right (they did not: it is a tradition, not science).
- True or false? Read each sentence twice before children circle. The three false ones are deliberately tempting (a bird, eats meat, shadow means early spring). The rewrite box asks for a true sentence, not just the word false.
- In what order? Children who are not yet writing can cut the four cards apart and glue them in order instead of writing the story on the lines.
- Word search. Words run across or down only, no diagonals and no backwards words, so this is a fair puzzle for five- and six-year-olds. Have children check each word off the list as they find it.
- My weather prediction. Fill it in before the real announcement, pin the pages up, and compare on February 2. The "I think this because" lines are the point: any reason counts as long as it is a reason.
Making it a Groundhog Day lesson
- Shadow science. Take the class outside at the same time on a sunny and a cloudy day and trace a shadow with chalk. That is the only real science in the holiday, and it is a good one.
- Six more weeks. Count six weeks forward on a calendar from February 2 and mark the date. Then look up when spring actually starts; children enjoy discovering that the groundhog's early spring is only about a week early.
- Graph the years. Older children can look up how often the famous groundhog has seen his shadow and make a second bar graph from the record.
Common issues to watch for
- Shadow means spring. The most common wrong answer on both the passage and the true or false sheet. The sequencing cards (shadow, then the two-way sign) help fix the direction.
- Tally marks in fives. Show the bundle-of-five mark before the graph sheet, or the totals will not match the bars.
- Graph bars colored from the top. Remind children to start at 0 and color upwards, one box per student.
Frequently asked questions
What age are these Groundhog Day worksheets for?
Preschool and kindergarten to second grade, roughly ages 4 to 8. The prediction graph, sequencing, word search and writing page work for the youngest children with an adult reading the instructions; the passage and the true or false sheet are first and second grade reading.
Do the worksheets include answer keys?
Yes. The passage, true or false, sequencing and word search PDFs have two pages: the worksheet and the same page with the answers filled in. The class graph and the prediction page have no key because the answers come from your class.
Is the passage accurate?
Yes. It gives the date, the burrow, the shadow tradition, Punxsutawney Phil and Pennsylvania, and it says in so many words that Groundhog Day is a tradition and not science. The true or false sheet sticks to real facts about groundhogs: they are woodchucks, rodents, plant eaters that hibernate in burrows.
Can I print them in black and white?
Yes. Every picture has a solid black outline and the tally boxes and graph bars are drawn with lines, so nothing depends on color. The color is a bonus for color printers.
Is this set free for classroom use?
Yes, for non-commercial educational use: a class set, a homeschool co-op or a kitchen table are all fine.
More practice
For more short nonfiction with questions at this level, see the kindergarten reading comprehension worksheets and the first grade reading comprehension worksheets. The word search printables have more puzzles in the same across-and-down style, and the handwriting paper gives children room to write a longer groundhog story. The Thanksgiving math worksheets and Christmas worksheets are the other seasonal sets drawn in this style.
