Six Valentine's Day worksheets for the reading and writing side of February: two word puzzles for the first ten minutes of the day, an alphabetical order sheet, two acrostic poem frames, friendship writing prompts for children who can already write sentences, and a card template that turns the lesson into something to take home. The words are the ones children meet all week (love, heart, friend, card, candy, rose, kind, sweet), so the sheets reinforce vocabulary they are already hearing, and the theme is friendship and kindness rather than romance, which keeps the set usable with any class. Puzzle sheets come with a solution on page 2; the poems, prompts and card are single pages.
What's in this set
- Valentine word search. Twelve words hidden in a 12 by 12 grid, across, down and diagonally: valentine, love, heart, friend, card, candy, roses, hug, kind, sweet, flowers, pink. Each word in the list has a small picture beside it.
- Valentine word scramble. Ten mixed-up words, each with a clue ("A squeeze with both arms"), to unscramble and write on the line.
- Valentine ABC order. Three sets of five words to write in alphabetical order. Sets 1 and 2 have different first letters; set 3 (flower, friend, fun, family, feel) all start with F, so the second letter decides.
- LOVE and FRIEND acrostic poems. Two acrostic frames on one page, each letter printed large beside a handwriting line with a dashed midline, plus an example first line for each.
- Friendship writing prompts. Four prompts with four lines each: a good friend is someone who, my friend makes me happy because, one kind thing I will do this week, the best thing about Valentine's Day.
- Make a Valentine card. A fold-in-four template: cut along the outline and fold twice. The front has a heart to color and a Happy Valentine's Day banner, the inside has Dear and From lines with writing lines and a drawing box, and the back has a "made with love by" line. The two top panels are printed upside down so everything reads the right way once folded.

Teaching tips and common mistakes
How to use these worksheets
Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter; print page 1 for children and keep page 2 to mark. The word search, acrostics and card suit kindergarten and first grade with support; the scramble, ABC order and writing prompts suit first to third grade. Print the card on card stock or heavier paper if you have it.
- Valentine word search. Read the twelve words aloud first with kindergarten so children know what they are looking for. Have them find the longest word (valentine) first; the rest come faster once one is circled.
- Valentine word scramble. Children read the clue before touching the letters: the clue narrows the word, then the letters confirm it. Letter tiles or a mini whiteboard help children who struggle to hold the letters in their head.
- Valentine ABC order. Have children cross out each word in the bank as they place it so none is used twice. Set 3 is the teaching moment: write the five F words on the board and underline the second letters together.
- LOVE and FRIEND acrostic poems. Brainstorm a word bank for each letter on the board first (L: laugh, listen, lunch; F: fun, fair, family). One word per line is fine for kindergarten; second and third graders can write a phrase or a whole line.
- Friendship writing prompts. Use one prompt a day across Valentine's week rather than all four at once. The third prompt (one kind thing I will do) can become a class pledge wall.
- Make a Valentine card. Decorate first, then cut, then fold: top half back along the dotted line, then left half behind right. Have children write their message inside before folding so the lines are flat. Each child can make one for a family member or a classmate drawn from a hat so nobody is left out.
Making it a Valentine's lesson
- Kindness focus. The writing prompts and the FRIEND acrostic move the day away from romance and towards friendship, which suits mixed-age and mixed-culture classes.
- Word wall. The twelve word search words make a February word wall; children find them again in the scramble and ABC order sheets later in the week.
- Display. Finished acrostics mounted on red or pink paper make a quick hallway display; the cards go home.
Common issues to watch for
- Backwards words. The word search places words across, down and diagonally but never backwards; tell children this so they stop checking reversed letters.
- First letter only. On ABC order set 3 some children order by the second word they see or guess. Ask them to say the second letter of each word aloud before writing.
- Folding before writing. Writing on a folded card produces torn paper and crooked lines; write first, fold last.
Frequently asked questions
What age are these Valentine's Day worksheets for?
Kindergarten to third grade, roughly ages 5 to 9. The word search, acrostics and card work for kindergarten and first grade with the words read aloud; the scramble, ABC order and writing prompts suit first to third grade.
Do the worksheets include answer keys?
Yes, for the three sheets that have answers: the word search solution with every word highlighted, the unscrambled words, and the three sets in alphabetical order, each on page 2 of its PDF. The poems, prompts and card are single pages.
Is the card template really a fold-in-four card?
Yes. Cut along the solid outline, fold the top half back along the dotted line, then fold the left half behind the right. The two top panels are printed upside down on purpose so the inside-left page and the back cover read the right way after folding. It folds to about 85 by 100 mm.
Are the sheets about romance?
No. The theme is friendship and kindness: a good friend, a kind thing to do, an acrostic for FRIEND. The word list uses love, heart and sweet in the everyday Valentine sense, and there are no cupids or licensed characters.
Is this set free for classroom use?
Yes, for non-commercial educational use: a class set, a homeschool group or a family Valentine afternoon are all fine.
More practice
The word search printables have more puzzles in the same grid style, and the word search maker builds one from your own class word list. For the handwriting side, see the handwriting worksheets and the heart tracing worksheets, which pair well with the card. The spelling worksheets and sight words worksheets continue the word work, and the Christmas worksheets use the same puzzle and writing formats for December.
