A word family is a group of words that share the same ending: cat, hat, bat, mat, rat, sat. Once a child can read "at", every word in the family is one new sound away, which is why families are the fastest route from sounding out letter by letter to reading whole words. These eight worksheets cover the ten most common short-vowel families (-at, -an, -ap, -ig, -in, -ip, -op, -ot, -ug, -ut) in the order a kindergartner or first grader meets them: build the words on ladders, sort them, supply the missing first letter from a picture, use them in sentences, then make words with a spinner and fill word family houses. A word hunt finishes the set. Six of the eight sheets have an answer key on page 2.

Teaching tips and common mistakes
How to use these worksheets
Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter. Work on one or two families a week rather than all ten at once; the sheets are built so you can do a column or a row at a time. Say sounds, not letter names: "c" is /k/, and "at" is one chunk.
- Word ladders. Read the family ending first ("at"), then add each beginning sound from the row: "c... at, cat". Every letter in the row makes a real word, so there is no wrong choice, only words still to find. Cover the finished ladder with a hand and see how many the child can read back.
- Sort the word families. Read a word, listen to the ending, point to the box. Children who sort by the first letter instead need to hear the rhyme: say two words from the bank and ask "do these rhyme?".
- Missing first letter. The picture supplies the word; the child supplies the first sound. If a child writes the wrong letter, ask them to say the word slowly with a finger under each box.
- Word family sentences. The family label at the end of each line is a hint: find the bank word that ends the same way, then check it makes sense in the sentence.
- Spin and write. A paperclip over a pencil tip is all the spinner needs. If a spin gives a word already on the list, spin again. Six real words per family.
- Word family houses. This is the writing sheet: no bank, no pictures. Use it after the family has been practiced, or as a homework page.
- Word family hunt. Words run across, down and diagonally. Tick each word off the bank as it is found.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Sounding out every letter, every time. The point of a family is to read "at" as one chunk. Cover the first letter and have the child read the ending alone, then uncover.
- Mixing -in and -an, -ot and -ut. Vowel confusions. Go back to the CVC words worksheets for the vowel that keeps slipping.
- Writing letters backwards. b and d, p and q. Not a reading problem; point to the letter worksheets for the letter that flips.
- Making up words on the spinner. "jat" is fun but not a word. Ask "is that a real word?" and spin again.
Frequently asked questions
What are word families?
Groups of words that share a rime, the vowel and everything after it: -at gives cat, hat, bat, mat; -ug gives bug, rug, mug, hug. Children learn the ending once and then read every word in the family by changing the first sound. About 37 families cover hundreds of the words in early readers.
Which word families should come first?
Short a families first (-at, -an, -ap), because short a is the first vowel most programs teach, then short i (-ig, -in, -ip), short o (-op, -ot) and short u (-ug, -ut). That is the order of the two ladder sheets.
What age or grade are these worksheets for?
Kindergarten and first grade, roughly ages 5 to 7, once a child knows most letter sounds and can blend a CVC word. The houses and spinner sheets suit first graders who can already read the families and need writing practice.
Do the worksheets have answer keys?
Yes, six of the eight: both ladder sheets, the sort, missing first letter, the sentences and the word hunt each have the answers on page 2. The spinner and houses sheets are open writing pages.
Can I use these in a classroom?
Yes. The PDFs are free for home and classroom use. The ladders and sort work as small-group tasks; the spinner is a good literacy-center activity.
