What the reading passage generator makes

Each run produces a complete, self-contained reading passage on the topic you type, written at the grade level you choose, followed by five comprehension questions and an answer key. Sentence length, vocabulary and the amount of background explanation all change with the grade: a passage about volcanoes for first grade is a short, concrete story with simple sentences, while the same topic for eighth grade reads like a short science article with cause and effect, technical terms defined in context and an inference question at the end.

Typical length by grade

• Kindergarten to grade 1: 60 to 100 words, one idea per sentence, familiar words
• Grades 2 to 3: 120 to 200 words, a clear beginning, middle and end, two or three new vocabulary words
• Grades 4 to 5: 250 to 350 words, paragraphs with topic sentences, vocabulary in context
• Grades 6 to 8: 400 to 500 words, informational structure, an inference or author's purpose question
• High school: 500 to 700 words, complex sentences, evidence-based questions

Fluency passages with word counts

Switch the format to fluency and the generator produces an oral reading fluency probe instead: a passage a little longer than a student at that grade reads in one minute, printed ten words to a line with the running word count in the right margin, followed by a scoring box for words read, errors, words correct per minute (WCPM) and accuracy. The grade target shown is the 50th percentile spring norm (Hasbrouck and Tindal, 2017): 60 WCPM in first grade, 100 in second, 112 in third, 133 in fourth and 146 in fifth. Generate three passages on the same topic and grade for a fall, winter and spring probe, or two for a cold read and a repeated read.

Ways teachers use it

• Differentiated reading groups: generate the same topic at three grade levels so every group reads about the same thing at its own level.
• Content-area reading: a passage on the exact science or social studies topic you are teaching this week, instead of whatever the basal reader offers.
• Sub plans and morning work: a passage plus questions is a complete 20-minute activity that needs no preparation.
• Test practice: non-fiction passages with main idea, vocabulary and inference questions in the format state tests use.
• High-interest topics for reluctant readers: a passage about a video game, a sport or a pet at a third grade level is still third grade reading practice.
