Glued sounds, also called welded sounds, are the chunks taught as one piece because the vowel and the sound after it run together and cannot be heard separately. There are eleven of them: all, am and an, then the -ng family (ang, ing, ong, ung) and the -nk family (ank, ink, onk, unk). A child who sounds bank out letter by letter gets the wrong answer, because the a in bank is not the clean short a of cat, so the chunk is learned whole. These eight worksheets introduce all eleven, build words with each family, and finish with a twenty-item check. Seven of the eight have an answer key on page 2.

Teaching tips and common mistakes
How to use these worksheets
Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter. Teach all, am and an first, which is where most programs put them, and leave the -ng and -nk families until a child can read short-vowel words without help. Keep sheet 1 on the table as a reference while the others are being done.
- Say the chunk, never the letters. The point of a glued sound is that the separate letter sounds do not add up to it. Model it the other way round: say the beginning sound, then the whole chunk, then the word. b, then ank, then bank.
- One family a session. Sheet 2 is the -ng family and sheet 3 is the -nk family. Do not mix them until each has been met on its own, or the child will guess.
- Use the hum test. ng hums and can be held: raaang. k stops the word dead: rank. Ask the child which one they can hold, and they will hear the difference themselves.
- Read the word bank aloud first. On the sorting and matching sheets, read every word before any writing starts. A child who cannot read the word cannot sort it.
- Finish with sheet 8. The check covers all eleven chunks. Mark it, note which chunk lost the most points, and go back to the build sheet for that family.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Mixing up ang and ank, or ing and ink. This is the most common error by a long way. Say the pair side by side (rang and rank, sing and sink) and have the child point to the one that ends with a stop.
- Sounding out letter by letter. If t-a-n-k comes out wrong, cover the chunk with a finger so only the t shows, then slide the finger away to reveal ank as one piece.
- Expecting the short vowel. In ball the a says /aw/, and in bank and pink the vowel is pulled out of shape by the sound after it. Do not correct a child who says the vowel sounds different. They are right, and that is why the chunk is glued.
- Hunting for onk words. honk, bonk and conk are almost the whole family. Teach it for completeness and move on rather than trying to find more.
- Calling every word with an in it a glued sound. Programs weld am and an in closed syllables such as ham and can. Words like hand, camp and branch have a different ending (and, amp, anch) and are taught separately, so they are left out of this set on purpose.
Frequently asked questions
What are glued sounds?
Chunks where the vowel and the sound after it blend so closely that you cannot hear them one at a time, so they are taught as a single unit instead of being sounded out. Say ink, then say short i followed by n and k, and listen to how different they are.
Are glued sounds and welded sounds the same thing?
Yes. Welded sound is the term used in the Wilson Reading System, glued sound is used in several other structured literacy programs, and some teachers just say chunk or unit. They all mean the same eleven pieces.
What are the 11 glued sounds?
all, am, an, ang, ing, ong, ung, ank, ink, onk and unk. The first three are usually taught early and on their own. The -ng and -nk families come later, once a child reads short-vowel words confidently.
Are and, amp and ink the same kind of chunk?
ink is one of the eleven. and and amp are not: they have a consonant after the nasal that belongs to a different pattern, so most programs teach them as blends rather than glued sounds. This set keeps to the eleven so that it matches what a child is being taught in a program.
What order should glued sounds be taught in?
all, am and an first, then the -ng family (ang, ing, ong, ung), then the -nk family (ank, ink, onk, unk). Within the last two, teach one family fully before mixing them, because ang and ank sound so alike.
Do these worksheets have answer keys?
Seven of the eight do, on page 2 with an answer key badge. Sheet 1 is a reference and copying page, so there is nothing to mark.
More phonics practice
Glued sounds come after short-vowel reading, so if a child is still blending three-letter words start with the CVC words worksheets, then the word families worksheets for the rimes these chunks sit inside. The digraphs worksheets cover sh, ch, th and wh, the other case where two letters make one sound, and the phonics worksheets and sight words worksheets fill in the rest of a beginning reader's week.
