How to use these worksheets
Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter. Each quiz is ten questions on one page, roughly ten minutes, so give one quiz a day instead of a stack. Say the word aloud and have the child repeat it before circling, because spelling choices are made by ear first.
- Spelling with fruit. Say apple, banana, orange, watermelon and strawberry slowly, then fill the gaps. Start with the shortest word.
- Circle the correct spelling. Cover two choices with a finger and read the third aloud. Light, eight and smoke are the ones to discuss.
- Silent e pairs. Read both options out loud, cat and cate, tap and tape. The child hears which matches the picture, then circles it.
- Pick the blend. Say frog, truck, drum and brush and ask only for the first two sounds. Ignore the rest of the word.
- Fill in the missing vowel. Work the grid one row at a time. If a child is stuck, try a, e, i, o, u in the gap until the word sounds right.
- Kindergarten quizzes. Three sheets on cow, bus, blue, banana and letter positions. Read every option aloud to a child who is not yet reading fluently.
- First grade quizzes. Six sheets covering cat, hut, baby, honey, winter and missing letters in c_t and tr_e. Use one Monday and the next Friday.
- Everyday word quizzes. Library, teacher, breakfast, butterfly and friend come up again and again. Have the child copy every missed word three times.

Common mistakes to watch for
- Choosing by shape. Children pick whichever option looks familiar instead of sounding it out. Cover the choices and ask for the word first.
- Not reading all four options. The distractors differ by one letter. Insist on a quick look at every option before anything is circled.
- Dropping double letters. Occurrence, beginning, balloon and necessary are missed this way. Have the child underline every doubled pair.
- Copying the misspelling. On the fix the spelling quiz, some children write the prompt back. Point out that the question itself is wrong.
Frequently asked questions
What grades are these spelling sheets for?
Grades 1 to 5. The five picture sheets and the sheets marked kindergarten or 1st grade suit ages 5 to 7. The quizzes with conference, residence, occurrence and hygiene are aimed at grades 4 and 5.
Are answer keys included?
No. Each quiz is ten questions with four spellings to choose from, and no key is printed. One correct spelling per question makes them fast to check, and a dictionary settles any argument.
Do they print in black and white?
Yes, apart from the fruit sheet, which uses a color picture beside each word. Everything else is black text and line drawings, so a standard black cartridge and copier paper are fine.
How do I pick the right sheet?
Give one quiz cold and count the misses. Eight or more correct means move up a group. Four or fewer means step back to the picture sheets or the kindergarten quizzes.
Can I use these in my classroom?
