Y is the only letter in English that works as a consonant and as a vowel, and it has four jobs. It is a consonant at the start of a word (yes, yellow, yard). It says long i at the end of a one-syllable word (my, fly, shy, sky). It says long e at the end of a word with two or more syllables (happy, candy, baby). And it says short i inside a syllable (gym, myth, crystal). These eight worksheets keep the four jobs separate and give the child a test that actually works: look at where the y sits, then count the syllables. Every sheet has its answer key on page 2.

Teaching tips and common mistakes

How to use these worksheets

Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter. Teach the jobs one at a time and only use the sorting and mixed sheets once each job has been met on its own. Sheets 2 and 3 are the two jobs children meet most often in reading, so they come first.

  • Always start with where the y is. At the start of a word it is a consonant and the question stops there. At the end, count syllables. In the middle, it is almost always short i.
  • Count syllables on fingers, out loud. This is the whole decision on sheets 2, 3 and 4. Shy is one clap so the y says long i; city is two claps so it says long e. Children who guess from the look of the word get these wrong about half the time.
  • Use the cover-the-y test for sheet 5. Cover the y: in yes you are left with es, which already has a vowel, so the y is a consonant. In fly you are left with fl, which has no vowel at all, so the y must be the vowel.
  • Treat the short i group as sight words. Gym, myth, system and symbol came into English from Greek. There are only a few dozen of them and learning them as a set is quicker than trying to reason them out.
  • Say the new word before writing it on the change-y-to-i sheet. Babies and carried sound right; "babys" and "carryed" do not.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Calling y a consonant everywhere because that is what the alphabet song implies. In fly, happy and gym there is no other vowel letter, so the y has to be doing the vowel work.
  • Mixing up the two long sounds. This is nearly always a syllable-counting problem, not a sound problem. Go back to clapping.
  • Adding -s to a consonant-plus-y word: "babys", "citys", "partys". Check the letter in front of the y every time.
  • Changing the y before -ing. It is carrying and crying, never "carriing". The rule only applies before -es, -ed, -er and -est.
  • Treating ay, ey and oy as vowel y. In day, key and boy the y is part of a two-letter vowel team, which is a different pattern and is why those words just add -s.

Frequently asked questions

When is y a vowel?

Whenever it is not at the start of a word or syllable. If the y is anywhere else, it is making a vowel sound: long i in my, long e in happy, short i in gym. A quick check is to cover the y and see whether any vowel letter is left; if none is, the y was the vowel.

Why does y say long i in my but long e in happy?

Syllable count. In a one-syllable word the final y takes the long i sound; in a word of two or more syllables the final y is in an unstressed syllable and takes the long e sound. The exceptions are words where the stress falls on the last syllable: July, reply, deny and supply all say long i.

When do you change y to i?

When the letter before the y is a consonant and you are adding -es, -ed, -er or -est: baby becomes babies, carry becomes carried, happy becomes happier. If the letter before the y is a vowel, as in play, enjoy and stay, change nothing. Never change the y before -ing.

What grade is y as a vowel taught in?

First grade introduces the long i and long e jobs, second grade covers the change-y-to-i rule, and third grade meets the short i group, so this set is labeled grades 1 to 3.

More phonics practice

Y as a vowel comes after the basic vowel sounds, so start with the CVC words worksheets and the word families worksheets if short vowels are still shaky. Two letters making one sound are covered on the digraphs worksheets, and the full sequence on the phonics worksheets. For the unstressed vowel that y often becomes in longer words, see the schwa sound worksheets.
