Using the packet

Getting the most from a spelling packet

A weekly spelling list is only learned if the words are met several times in different ways, which is what the packet is for. The order most teachers use is: write it three times on Monday, the scramble and the missing-letters page midweek, alphabetical order on Thursday, and the test on Friday. Each page makes the child look at the whole word, not just copy it letter by letter.

Write it three times is the plainest page and the most useful one for new words: read, cover, write, check. Ask the child to say each letter name as they write it. Missing letters targets the hard part of each word; the hidden letters are chosen at random, so pressing Shuffle gives a second version that tests a different spot in the same word, useful for a retake. The scramble makes the child hold the letters in mind and try orders, which is stronger practice than it looks, and the word bank keeps it from becoming guesswork.

Alphabetical order is a dictionary skill as much as a spelling one. The instruction on the page reminds the child to look at the second letter when two words start the same way; choose lists with a few shared first letters to make the page worth doing.

For the test sheet, read each word, use it in a sentence, and read it again; the numbered lines leave room for a correction. Turn on the sentence line for older children and dictate a short sentence containing the word, which tests the spelling in context and catches homophones. With 14 or more words the sheet moves to two columns, so the test still fits one page; the sentence-line version prints 12 words a page and adds pages as needed.

The answer key prints last and lists the scramble, missing-letters and alphabetical answers side by side, so marking takes a minute. Save the whole packet as a PDF from the print dialog and it is ready for next year, or for the child who was absent. Lists with 10 to 15 words make the tidiest pages; the tool takes up to 25.

Ready-made practice is in the spelling worksheets, sight words worksheets and word families worksheets collections. To trace the same list in print or cursive, use the handwriting worksheet generator; for a puzzle from the list, the word search maker; for cards to drill it, the flashcard maker.

How it works

How to make a spelling worksheet packet

Three steps from a word list to a week of practice pages.

  1. 1

    Enter the words

One per line, 5 to 25 words, or load a preset phonics or Dolch list and edit it.

  2. 2

    Tick the pages

Test sheet, scramble, missing letters, ABC order, write three times and the answer key. Shuffle for new scrambles.

  3. 3

    Print the packet

Letter or A4. Each page prints on its own sheet with a name and date line. Save as PDF to reuse next year.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Yes. Paste 5 to 25 words, tick the pages you want and print or save as a PDF. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on lists. The pages are built in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

A spelling test sheet with numbered blank lines (and an optional sentence line under each word), a word scramble, a fill-in-the-missing-letters page, an alphabetical order page, a write-it-three-times practice page, and an answer key covering the scramble, missing letters and ABC order. Each is a tick box, so a packet can be one page or all six.

Both are seeded from the word list, so the same list always gives the same pages and a packet can be reprinted later. A scrambled word is never identical to the real word. Words of up to four letters lose one letter; longer words lose two, never the first letter. Press Shuffle for a different scramble and a different set of hidden letters; the answer key updates with it.

The tool takes 5 to 25. Ten to fifteen words is typical for grades 1 to 3; twenty for grades 4 and up. Up to 13 words print in one column with long writing lines; 14 or more switch to two columns so the page stays on one sheet. The test sheet with sentence lines prints 12 words per page, and the three-times page 20.

The preset menu has short phonics lists (short-vowel CVC words, silent e, blends, digraphs, -ing endings), grade 2 to 4 common-word lists, and the Dolch sight-word lists cut into groups of 20. Loading a preset fills the word box; edit the words before you print.
