Each of these symmetry drawing worksheets shows half of a picture on a grid with a dashed mirror line down the middle. The child draws the missing half, counting squares to keep both sides the same. The four picture sheets get progressively harder: a heart and a kite with a few big lines, a house and a fir tree, a rocket and a robot with small details, and a butterfly and flower with curves. A fifth sheet has two blank grids for children to invent their own symmetrical pictures.

What Students Will Practice

  • Understanding line (reflective) symmetry and mirror images
  • Using a grid to place lines accurately: counting squares across and down
  • Drawing straight lines, right angles, circles and curves
  • Visual-spatial reasoning: mentally flipping a shape
  • Planning a drawing before making a mark

Symmetry drawing sits in both the art and math curriculum. It supports Common Core 4.G.A.3 (identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry) and the year 2 to year 4 symmetry objectives in England, while building drawing skills.

Teaching tips and common mistakes

How to Use These Worksheets

Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter paper. Use a pencil so mistakes can be erased, and have a small mirror handy if possible.

  • Show the idea with a mirror first. Stand a mirror on the dashed line and let the child see the completed picture. Then take it away and draw.
  • Count squares out loud. “This line starts two squares left of the mirror line and goes down three squares, so on the other side it starts two squares right and goes down three.” Modelling this once is usually enough.
  • Work one line at a time. Find where a line begins and ends on the drawn half, mark the matching points on the blank half, then join them.
  • Do the sheets in order. Sheet 1 has only straight lines and one curve. Sheet 4 (butterfly and flower) needs confident curved lines and is best after the others.
  • Finish with design your own. On sheet 5, children draw half a picture on one side and complete it on the other, or swap with a partner and complete each other’s.
  • Color the finished pictures. Coloring both halves the same way is a second symmetry exercise.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Copying instead of reflecting: The most common error is drawing the same half again, so the picture points the same way twice. The mirror fixes this instantly.
  • Losing count on long lines: Mark the end point first, then draw the line to it.
  • Drawing freehand and ignoring the grid: Fine for older children, but younger ones get a better result by using the grid lines as guides.
  • Forgetting the details: Windows, eyes and wing spots also need to be mirrored. Ask the child to check every small shape at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age are symmetry drawing worksheets for?

Sheets 1 and 2 suit ages 5 to 7. Sheets 3 and 4 suit ages 7 to 10. The design-your-own sheet works at any age, and older children can attempt all five in one sitting.

What is line symmetry?

A shape has line symmetry if one half is the mirror image of the other. The line where the mirror would sit is the line of symmetry, shown on these sheets as a dashed line.

How do I check the finished drawing?

Fold the sheet along the dashed line and hold it up to a window. The two halves should line up. A small mirror stood on the line also shows what the completed half should look like.

Do these worksheets have answers?

The completed picture is the answer: a heart, kite, house, tree, rocket, robot, butterfly or flower. Because the drawn half shows every line, the child can self-check by counting squares.

More Drawing and Geometry Activities

The copy the picture worksheets use the same grid method to copy a whole picture square by square. The geometric coloring pages and mandala coloring pages are full of symmetrical patterns to color, and the shapes worksheets introduce the 2D shapes used in these drawings.
