The multiplication bead board is how Montessori children first meet multiplication as repeated groups they can see. The number being multiplied sits on a card in the slot; a red disc slides along the top to say how many times; red beads fill one column for each time. Four columns of six beads is 6 × 4, and the child counts 24 beads. Working through a table (6 × 1, then 6 × 2, adding one column each time) and recording every product is what turns the picture into a memorized fact. This set gives you the board and its cards to print on card stock, sheets that ask the child to read boards and to build facts, recording sheets for the tables 2 to 9, the control chart with missing products, and the division board that follows, with its own recording sheet. Every sheet with something to work out has an answer key on page 2.

Teaching tips and common mistakes
How to use these worksheets
Print the board and the number cards on card stock. You need about a hundred red beads (dried red beans or buttons are fine), one red counter for the disc, and for the division board 81 green beads and nine "skittles" such as clothes pegs. Introduce the board with one table, done slowly, before any sheet.
- Presenting a fact. Put the 4 card in the slot. Say "four, taken three times". Place the disc above the 3. Fill column 1 with four beads, column 2 with four, column 3 with four. Count all the beads: twelve. Write 4 × 3 = 12 on the recording sheet.
- Read the bead board. The child reads the card (the number being multiplied), reads the disc (how many times), writes the fact and then counts the beads. Let them count by columns: "four, eight, twelve".
- Build the fact. The reverse: from a written fact, color beads on the mini board. Coloring one column at a time keeps the "groups of" meaning in view. The disc goes above the last column.
- Tables recording sheets. One table a day. Leave the card in the slot and move the disc from 1 to 10, adding a column each time, so the child sees the product grow by the same amount every step.
- Finger chart. Give it after several tables are recorded. The child finds each missing product with two fingers (down from the top number, across from the side number) and checks doubtful ones on the board.
- Division board. Stand a skittle in each dotted circle up to the divisor. Count out the dividend in green beads and deal them one row at a time under the skittles. The number of beads under one skittle is the quotient. The recording sheet only has divisions that come out exactly, so nothing is left over.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Filling rows instead of columns. The beads go down a column, one column per "time". Rows across look the same on a full board but lose the meaning of groups.
- Forgetting to move the disc. The disc is the child's place marker. Move it before adding the next column.
- Counting every bead every time. Fine at first; encourage counting on by the card number ("twelve, sixteen, twenty") once a table is familiar.
- Sharing beads unevenly on the division board. One bead to each skittle in turn, like dealing cards. If a row is incomplete at the end, that is the remainder.
Frequently asked questions
What age is the multiplication bead board for?
About 6 to 8, first to third grade, after the child has done addition to 18 on the addition strip board and knows the numbers to 100 from the hundred board. Older children who struggle with times tables also benefit because the board shows what a product is.
Do I need the wooden board?
No. The printed board on card, with beans or buttons for beads, works the same way. If you own the material, use these sheets for the reading, building and recording work, which is what the paper is for.
Which number goes in the slot?
The multiplicand, the number being multiplied. It stays put while the child works through a table; the disc along the top changes for each fact. The number of beads in every column always equals the card.
Do the worksheets have answer keys?
Yes. Read the board, build the fact, both tables sheets, the finger chart and the division recording sheet all have the answers on page 2. The two boards are printables with nothing to mark.
What comes after the bead boards?
The multiplication and division charts (the finger chart here is chart 1) for memorization, then the checkerboard and the stamp game for multiplying larger numbers.
More times tables and Montessori math
Practice individual tables with the 2 times table worksheets and 5 times table worksheets, keep the multiplication chart at hand as a control, and move on to the division facts worksheets once the division board is familiar. The rest of the sequence: bead stair, golden beads, teen and ten boards, hundred board, addition strip board, stamp game, all listed on the Montessori math worksheets page.
