Multi-digit multiplication is where a lot of confidence is won or lost in grade 4 and 5. The method is the same every time, multiply by each digit, line up the partial products, add, but it needs the times tables to be automatic and the columns to stay straight. This set gives a clear progression: 2-digit × 1-digit to learn regrouping, 2-digit × 2-digit to learn partial products, then 3-digit × 1-digit, 3-digit × 2-digit and 3-digit × 3-digit. The five graded sheets have space to show working and their answer key on page 2; the five original 2-digit × 2-digit pages give twenty problems each for fluency once the method is secure.

What Students Will Practice

  • Multiplying a multi-digit number by a single digit with regrouping
  • Writing partial products for each digit of the second number, with the place-holding zero
  • Adding partial products accurately, keeping columns aligned
  • Estimating first (400 × 40 is about 16,000) to spot a wrong answer
  • Building speed with twenty-problem practice pages once the method is reliable

These skills are Common Core 4.NBT.B.5 (multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit number, and two two-digit numbers) and 5.NBT.B.5 (fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm), and Year 5 and Year 6 of the UK national curriculum (multiply numbers up to 4 digits by a one- or two-digit number using a formal written method).

How to Use These Worksheets

Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter. Work through the graded sheets in order; only move to the twenty-problem pages when a child can explain the method.

  • Sheet 6: 2-digit × 1-digit. Twelve problems such as 47 × 6. The only new idea is carrying, so this is where to fix regrouping habits.
  • Sheet 7: 2-digit × 2-digit. Nine problems with room for both partial products. Insist on writing the 0 before multiplying by the tens digit; it is the single most common error in the whole topic.
  • Sheets 8 to 10: 3-digit numbers. Twelve 3 × 1 problems, then six 3 × 2 and six 3 × 3 with generous working space. Estimate first, then multiply, then compare.
  • Fluency: sheets 1 to 5. Twenty 2-digit × 2-digit problems each with no answer key, so they work as timed practice or homework once the method is secure. Check answers against a calculator or the method sheets.
  • Grid paper helps. If digits drift out of their columns, print on squared paper or turn lined paper sideways.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Missing the place-holding zero: 34 × 27 becomes 238 + 68 instead of 238 + 680. The zero is not optional.
  • Forgetting the carried digit: or adding it before multiplying instead of after. Say “multiply, then add the carry”.
  • Columns drifting: partial products added out of alignment. Squared paper fixes this instantly.
  • Times-table slips: 7 × 8 and 6 × 9 cause more wrong answers than the method does. A quick tables warm-up before the sheet pays off.
  • No estimate: a child who expects 428 × 36 to be about 16,000 will notice an answer of 1,540.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grade is multi-digit multiplication?

2-digit × 1-digit and 2-digit × 2-digit are grade 4 (UK Year 4 and 5); 3-digit × 2-digit and larger are grade 5 (UK Year 5 and 6). Sheets 6 to 10 follow that order.

What is the standard algorithm for multiplication?

Multiply the top number by the ones digit of the bottom number, then by the tens digit (writing a 0 first), then by the hundreds digit (writing 00 first), and add the partial products. It is the method the graded sheets leave space for.

Should students use the box or area method instead?

The area (box) method is a good bridge because it makes the partial products visible. Many teachers move to the standard algorithm once students can explain where each partial product comes from. Either method works on these sheets; the working space is deliberately open.

Do these worksheets have answer keys?

Sheets 6 to 10 include their answer key as page 2 of the PDF. Sheets 1 to 5 are fluency pages without keys.

How many problems should a child do in one sitting?

Six to twelve done carefully, with working shown, beats twenty rushed. Use the twenty-problem pages as timed practice only after the method is reliable.

More Multiplication Practice

Fluent tables make the algorithm easy: revise with the 2 times table worksheets and the rest of the times table series. Multiplying by 2 is doubling, so the doubles addition worksheets are a useful warm-up for younger students, and the prime number worksheets use the same multiplication facts for factor trees.
