Free long division worksheets
Five free printable long division worksheets for grade 4 and grade 5: 2-digit, 3-digit and 4-digit dividends divided by a single digit, with and without remainders, set out in the bracket with working room and worked examples. Answer keys on page 2. PDF download.

Long division, 2-digit ÷ 1-digit, no remainders: 12 problems
Twelve 2-digit dividends divided by a single digit with no remainder, set out in the long division bracket with a worked example (divide, multiply, subtract, bring down) and generous working room. Answer key on page 2.

Long division, 2-digit ÷ 1-digit with remainders: 12 problems
Twelve 2-digit dividends that do not divide exactly, so each answer is written as a quotient with a remainder (r). Answer key on page 2.

Long division, 3-digit ÷ 1-digit, no remainders: 9 problems
Nine 3-digit dividends divided exactly by a single digit, each needing two or three rounds of divide, multiply, subtract and bring down. Answer key on page 2.

Long division, 3-digit ÷ 1-digit with remainders: 9 problems
Nine 3-digit dividends that leave a remainder, for children who are secure with exact division. Answer key on page 2.

Long division, 4-digit ÷ 1-digit plus 3 word problems
Six 4-digit dividends divided by a single digit (some with a zero in the quotient) and three word problems that need long division, including one where the remainder matters. Answer key on page 2.

Long division is the first written method that asks children to hold four steps in order: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. Most mistakes are not arithmetic errors but lost places, a step skipped or digits written in the wrong column. These five worksheets grow the method one digit at a time, from 2-digit dividends with no remainder to 4-digit dividends and word problems, with the standard bracket already drawn and 30 to 40 mm of working room under every problem.
The first two sheets carry a fully worked example written in words, the remainder sheets explain the “r” notation, and every sheet has its answer key on page 2 with the check multiplication (quotient × divisor, plus remainder) written under each answer.
What’s in this set
- Long division, 2-digit ÷ 1-digit, no remainders: 12 problems. Worked example 96 ÷ 4 at the top. Every quotient is 2 digits, so the child divides, multiplies, subtracts and brings down exactly once.
- Long division, 2-digit ÷ 1-digit with remainders: 12 problems. Worked example 59 ÷ 7. Answers written as a quotient and remainder, like 8 r 3.
- Long division, 3-digit ÷ 1-digit, no remainders: 9 problems. Two or three rounds of the four steps, including dividends whose first digit is smaller than the divisor.
- Long division, 3-digit ÷ 1-digit with remainders: 9 problems. For children who are secure with exact division.
- Long division, 4-digit ÷ 1-digit plus 3 word problems. Six 4-digit dividends, some with a zero in the quotient, and three problems to set up from words, one where the remainder has to be interpreted.
What students will practice
- Finding whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors (CCSS 4.NBT.B.6)
- Using the relationship between multiplication and division to check an answer
- Interpreting remainders in context (4.OA.A.3)
- Fluent division of multi-digit numbers (5.NBT.B.6)

Teaching tips and common mistakes
How to use these worksheets
Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter. Squared paper is not needed because the bracket is drawn, but a times-table chart beside the page helps in the first week.
- Learn the chant. Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down. Some children remember it as “Does McDonald’s Sell Burgers?” Say it for every step of the first sheet.
- Sheet 1, worked example 96 ÷ 4. 4 into 9 goes 2 (write 2 above the 9). 2 × 4 = 8, 9 - 8 = 1. Bring down the 6 to make 16. 4 into 16 goes 4 (write 4 above the 6). 16 - 16 = 0. Answer 24. Check: 24 × 4 = 96.
- Sheet 2, remainders. For 59 ÷ 7, 7 does not go into 5, so use 59: 7 × 8 = 56 is the closest without going over. Write 8, subtract to get 3, answer 8 r 3. The remainder must always be smaller than the divisor.
- Sheets 3 and 4, 3-digit dividends. If the divisor is bigger than the first digit, put nothing above it and use two digits. Keep every subtraction directly under the digits it came from; drifting columns are the main cause of wrong answers here.
- Sheet 5, 4-digit and word problems. Watch for a step where the divisor does not go into the number brought down: write 0 in the quotient and bring down the next digit. In the word problems, ask what the remainder means: a baker with 7 cookies left over cannot make part of a bag.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Skipping the zero in the quotient. 4341 ÷ 3: after 3 goes into 4 once with 1 left, bringing down 3 gives 13, then 13 - 12 = 1, bring down 4 gives 14, and so on. But in 2790 ÷ 6 the child gets to 3 with nothing to bring down but 0 and must write a 0. Answer 465, not 46 or 4650.
- Remainder bigger than the divisor. 59 ÷ 7 = 7 r 10 is wrong because 10 is bigger than 7; the quotient should be 8. Check the remainder every time.
- Multiplying by the wrong number. The number written above the bracket is multiplied by the divisor, not by the digit below it. Saying “8 times 7” out loud helps.
- Not checking. Quotient × divisor + remainder = dividend. The answer key shows this check for every problem so children can copy the habit.
Answer key
Page 2 of each PDF shows the quotient (and remainder) above every bracket with the check multiplication underneath. Word-problem answers are given with a number sentence and a unit.
Frequently asked questions
What grade is long division taught in?
Fourth grade introduces dividing multi-digit numbers by a one-digit divisor with remainders; fifth grade expects fluency and adds two-digit divisors. These five sheets cover the fourth-grade content and the start of fifth grade.
Does my child need to know their times tables first?
Yes. Every round of long division uses a multiplication fact (and its division fact) to find the next digit of the quotient. A child who is still working out 7 × 8 will lose track of the steps. Secure the facts first, then start with the no-remainder sheet.
Long division or the bus stop method?
Same method, different names. In the UK the bracket is called the bus stop and short division writes the remainders as small digits instead of subtracting underneath. These sheets use the full long form because it shows every step, which is what a child needs while learning.
What does the r mean?
Remainder: what is left after dividing as far as whole numbers allow. 59 ÷ 7 = 8 r 3 because 8 × 7 = 56 and 59 - 56 = 3. Later the remainder becomes a fraction (8 and 3/7) or a decimal.
More practice
Quick recall of the division facts is what makes long division flow, and a multiplication chart beside the page is a fair aid in the first week. Children who find the multiply step slow can practise the written method with the multi-digit multiplication worksheets.
