Six Halloween coloring pages at different levels of detail, so one set covers a mixed-age classroom or a family of different ages. The friendly ghost and the three pumpkins on a fence can be finished by a four-year-old; the swirly pumpkin will keep a ten-year-old busy for half an hour. All six are friendly rather than frightening: no skeletons, blood or monsters, which makes them safe to hand out without checking who gets what.

What's in this set

  1. Friendly ghost trick-or-treating. A smiling ghost holding a jack-o-lantern candy basket in front of houses with a picket fence, pumpkins and flowers. Large areas, medium outline detail. Ages 4 to 7.
  2. Haunted house at night. A tall house with a turret, bare trees, bats, a full moon, and a path lined with grinning jack-o-lanterns. Many mid-sized areas. Ages 6 to 10.
  3. Swirly jack-o-lantern. A single pumpkin face covered in curls, dots and vine spirals in the style of a doodle or zentangle page. Small areas and intricate patterns. Ages 8 and up, and adults who color.
  4. Three jack-o-lanterns on a fence. A happy, a silly and a winking pumpkin in front of a picket fence, with a full moon, stars and two bats. Bold outlines and big areas. Ages 4 to 8.
  5. Cat in a witch hat. A cat wearing a witch hat sits on a large smiling pumpkin under a crescent moon, with a spider dangling on its thread and candy on the grass. Medium detail. Ages 5 to 9.
  6. Trick-or-treat bag full of candy. A jack-o-lantern candy bag spilling lollipops, wrapped sweets and candy corn, with bats overhead and more candy on the ground. Many small areas. Ages 6 to 10.

What students will practice

  • Fine motor control at three levels: broad filling (pages 1 and 4), medium detail (pages 2 and 5) and precise small-area work (pages 3 and 6)
  • Choosing a limited palette: Halloween pages look best with orange, black, purple, green and white left blank
  • Light and dark: pages 2 and 4 are night scenes, so children decide what glows (moon, windows, pumpkin faces) and what stays dark
  • Pattern awareness on page 3: repeating swirls can be colored in a repeating color sequence
  • Seasonal vocabulary: ghost, jack-o-lantern, haunted house, bat, trick-or-treat, full moon, witch hat, candy corn

How to use these coloring pages in class

  • Tiered task, one lesson. Give the ghost or the fence pumpkins to children who need a quick win, the haunted house or the cat to most of the class, and the swirly pumpkin or the candy bag to fast finishers or older students. Everyone is doing "the Halloween coloring page", so nobody feels singled out.
  • Warm and cool colors (art, grades 2 to 5). The haunted house and the fence pumpkins are ideal: color the jack-o-lanterns, windows and moon in warm colors and everything else in cool colors. Hold the finished pages at arm's length and talk about what "glows".
  • Pattern and sequence (math link). On the swirly pumpkin, choose three colors and color the swirls in a repeating ABC pattern. On the candy bag, color every wrapped sweet in a two-color stripe pattern.
  • Oral language. The ghost and the cat pages have a story in them: where is the ghost going, what is in the basket, why is the cat wearing a hat? Color first, then children tell a partner the story in three sentences.
  • Calm-down or early-finisher tray. Keep a stack of the swirly pumpkin and the candy bag in the October tray. The repetitive shapes are genuinely calming and take a long time.
  • Display. The haunted house colored by a whole class and mounted on black paper makes a striking corridor display, especially if children add a yellow moon with chalk.

Printing tips

  • Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter. The pages are black line art with no gray shading, so they print cleanly on any printer.
  • The swirly pumpkin and the candy bag have fine detail: print them on 100 gsm or heavier paper and use sharp pencils or fine-tip markers, not crayons.
  • Pages 4 to 6 have a name and date line at the top; pages 1 to 3 do not, so write names on the back before handing those out.

Common issues to watch for

  • Coloring the night sky black with crayon. On the haunted house and fence pages the sky is a large area; black crayon leaves streaks and smudges onto hands. Suggest dark blue or purple pencil, or leave the sky white and color everything else.
  • Rushing the detailed pages. Children used to broad coloring sometimes scribble across the swirls or the candy. Show a half-finished example with three colors in sequence before they begin.
  • Frightened children. The set is deliberately gentle, but if a young child is uneasy with the haunted house, the ghost or the fence pumpkins are the alternative.

Frequently asked questions

What age are these Halloween coloring pages for?

The ghost and the fence pumpkins suit ages 4 to 8, the haunted house and the cat in a witch hat ages 5 to 10, and the swirly pumpkin and the candy bag ages 6 and up, including teenagers and adults.

Are the designs scary?

No. The ghost smiles, the pumpkins grin, the cat is a cartoon and there are no skeletons or monsters. The haunted house and the bats are a night scene that most six-year-olds find exciting rather than frightening.

How many pages are in the set?

Six, one per PDF, at three levels of difficulty. For a longer Halloween activity, pair them with the color by number and connect the dots sets linked below.

Do the pages have a name line?

Pages 4 to 6 (fence pumpkins, cat, candy bag) have a name and date line. Pages 1 to 3 are full-bleed designs, so ask children to write their name on the back or in a corner.

Can I print these for a school or a party?

Yes. They are free for non-commercial educational use, including a class set or a Halloween party table.

The color by number worksheets include a Halloween pumpkin grid for number practice in the same season. The connect the dots printables and animal coloring pages work at any time of year, and the winter coloring pages and Christmas coloring pages are the next seasonal sets after October.
