Dot to dot 1 to 20 is the first real connect the dots puzzle a child can finish alone: enough dots to make a picture, few enough to count without help. These eight join the dots worksheets each hide one simple object behind twenty numbered dots. The dots and numbers are large, the start dot is big and colored, and each picture has a hint at the bottom ("something that goes beep beep"). Page 2 of every PDF is the answer key with the solid outline and the details drawn in, ready to color. Every puzzle prints on one A4 or US Letter page.
What's in this set
- Full of love. A heart: two curves, a dip and a point.
- A sweet treat. An ice cream cone, scoop and waffle cone.
- Home sweet home. A house with a pointed roof and a chimney; door and windows on the key.
- Fit for a king. A crown with five points and jewels.
- Which way? An arrow pointing up, the easiest picture in the set: seven corners and straight lines only.
- Flash and crash. A lightning bolt, all zigzag corners.
- A warm drink. A mug of hot cocoa with a handle and steam.
- Beep beep. A car with two wheels built into the outline.
Straight-line pictures (the arrow, the lightning bolt, the house, the crown) are good first puzzles; the heart, the mug and the car add curves.

Teaching tips and common mistakes
How to use these worksheets
Print at 100%. Give the child a pencil, not a pen, so a wrong line can be rubbed out. Point to the big colored dot, say "one", and let them find "two". A ruler is optional; freehand lines are fine and better practice for pencil control.
- Count out loud. The point of a 1 to 20 dot to dot is the counting sequence. Say each number as the line arrives at it. Children who lose their place can put a finger on the last dot they reached.
- Read the hint first. Each puzzle has a one-line hint under the dots. Guessing the picture before starting turns the puzzle into a game and helps the child notice when a line goes wrong.
- Finish with the last line. The line from 20 back to 1 closes the picture. Children often stop at 20; point back to the start dot.
- Color the answer key. Page 2 has the finished outline with details (eyes, wheels, jewels). Colour it, or draw the same details onto the puzzle page.
- Repeat with the numbers covered. For a child who knows the sequence well, cover the number labels with small sticky dots and let them connect the picture from memory of where the numbers were.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Skipping a number. The line jumps from 12 to 14. The picture will look odd; go back and find 13.
- Joining nearby dots instead of the next number. Dots that sit close together (the chimney, the mug handle, the wheels) tempt children to connect neighbors. Say "the next number, not the nearest dot".
- Stopping at 20. The picture is open until the last line goes back to 1.
- Teen numbers. Thirteen to nineteen are the hardest to name in order. Say them together before starting if they are new.
Frequently asked questions
What age are dot to dot 1-20 worksheets for?
Ages 4 to 6. A child needs to count to 20 and recognize the written numerals to do them alone; a younger child can do them with an adult naming each number. Kindergarten standards ask children to count to 20 by ones and to write numbers 0 to 20.
Do these have answer keys?
Yes. Page 2 of every PDF shows the finished outline with the dots, faded numbers and the details drawn in, plus the name of the picture. Print page 1 only if you want the puzzle alone.
Dot to dot, join the dots or connect the dots?
They are the same puzzle. "Dot to dot" and "connect the dots" are the usual US names; "join the dots" is common in the UK and Australia. The sheets say "join the dots" in the instructions.
Why are the pictures so simple?
Twenty dots can only draw a simple silhouette, so the pictures are everyday objects with a clear outline: a heart, a house, a car. The answer key adds the details. For more detailed pictures, use the 1 to 50 and 1 to 100 puzzles.
Can I use these in a classroom?
Yes. The PDFs are free for home and classroom use. They work as a morning starter, a math center for number order, or a quiet activity for early finishers.
More dot to dot and counting practice
Ready for more dots? The dot to dot 1 to 100 worksheets have four 100-dot puzzles, two 50-dot puzzles and two skip-counting pages. The older connect the dots printables page has twenty animal and fruit puzzles with 20 to 70 dots. For the numbers themselves, print the number tracing worksheets 1 to 20 and the number flashcards. For the pencil control underneath every dot to dot, start with the pre-writing worksheets and the line tracing worksheets, and for another follow-the-line puzzle try the copy the picture worksheets.
