These nine number coloring pages give children one big numeral at a time, from 1 to 9. Each page has a large bubble-letter number filling the sheet, decorated with a flower, a leaf and sparkles, and most sit inside a pencil border. The details change from page to page: number 1 has a flower on top and small hearts, number 2 has two small flowers at its base, number 4 has a swirl at the base, numbers 6 and 9 have a flower tucked inside the loop, and number 8 has a flower on its top loop. There are no color keys or numbered sections; the numeral itself is the picture.
Coloring a single large number is a gentle way to practice number recognition. The child says the number, follows its shape with a finger or crayon, and spends several minutes looking at how it is formed while filling it in. Because the numerals are wide and open, they also suit children who are still learning to color inside a line.
What Students Will Practice
- Recognizing and naming the numerals 1 to 9, one per page, in order or as single pages
- Learning the shape of each digit by coloring inside a large, wide outline, including the loops of 6, 8 and 9
- Coloring small details such as flowers, leaves, hearts and sparkles without going over the lines
- Counting the decorations on a page, for example the two flowers on the number 2 page
- Building crayon grip and hand strength through a longer, calm coloring task

How to use these coloring pages
Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter so each numeral keeps its full width, and print one page at a time rather than the whole set. Crayons suit the large open areas better than markers, which bleed. There is no answer key or color key: the child picks every color.
- Number 1. Start here. The single downstroke is the easiest shape to trace with a finger before any coloring begins.
- Number 2. Ask your child to find the two flowers at the base before coloring, then color both in the same color. The page ties the numeral to a quantity of two without any extra materials.
- Number 3. The motion lines beside the 3 show which way its two curves open. Have your child slide a finger around both curves first.
- Numbers 4 and 5. A swirl at the base and a flower on the lower curve make these two slower. Save them for a day when you want a quiet ten minutes.
- Numbers 6 and 9. Color these on the same day and lay them side by side. Both hide a flower inside the loop, so the only difference a child can point to is whether the loop sits at the bottom or the top.
- Number 7. The long diagonal stem is where children stray outside the line. Ask for strokes that run down the stem, not across it.
- Number 8. Two loops means two chances to stop at a line. Suggest one color for the top loop and another for the bottom so the child has a reason to slow down where the loops meet.
Making it a lesson
- Name the number first, then again at the end. Coloring only builds number recognition if the digit gets a name. Two seconds of naming turns a coloring page into number practice.
- Count something to match. After the 5 is colored, put five crayons, buttons or grapes on the table. The numeral then stands for an amount, not just a shape.
- Hang them in order. Tape the finished pages from 1 to 9 at your child's eye level and you have a number line they made.
- Let the small details go. A three year old can color the big numeral and leave the sparkles and leaves blank.
Frequently asked questions
What age are these number coloring pages for?
Ages 3 to 6, which covers preschool and kindergarten. The outlines are wide and open, so a three year old can fill them in, while a five year old gets more out of naming and forming each digit.
Is there a color key to follow?
No. These are open coloring pages with no numbered sections and no key, so there is nothing to mark as right or wrong. If you want a page with a key, try the color by number set below.
Do the pages cover 0 and 10?
No, the set runs from 1 to 9, one numeral per page. For 10 and above, pair these with number tracing or flashcards.
Will they print in black and white?
Yes. The numerals and decorations are line art only, so a black and white printer gives exactly what the child needs. Color ink adds nothing here.
Can I print a class set?
Yes. The pages are free to print for your own classroom, center or home, including one copy per child.
More practice
Once your child knows the digits by sight, move on to number tracing worksheets for 1 to 20 to start writing them, or use number flashcards to check recognition out of order.
