These eight fractions worksheets are the starting point of our fractions section: the ideas every later skill rests on. A fraction names equal parts of a whole; the bottom number says how many parts make the whole and the top number says how many we are talking about. The sheets move in that order. Children first read fractions from pictures, then shade pictures to match a fraction, then check whether parts are actually equal (they often are not), then meet fractions of a group, a fraction wall, a matching page, number lines and finally the words. Every sheet has an answer key on page 2, and every picture is a clean pie or bar that prints well in black and white.

What's in this set

  1. What fraction is shaded? Twelve pies and bars from halves to eighths; count and write the fraction. Key on page 2.
  2. Shade the fraction. Twelve outline pictures with a fraction beside each; shade that many parts. Key on page 2.
  3. Halves, thirds and fourths. Twelve shapes, some cut into equal parts and some not. Circle the equal ones and name the unit fraction. Grade 2 level. Key on page 2.
  4. Fraction of a set. Groups of circles, squares and stars: what fraction is shaded, or circle a third or a half of the objects. Key on page 2.
  5. Fraction wall: fill and read. A wall from one whole to twelfths with twelve blank bricks to label and six questions to answer from it. Key on page 2.
  6. Match the picture to the fraction. Eight pictures, eight shuffled fraction cards, draw the lines. Key on page 2.
  7. Fractions on a number line, 0 to 1. Six lines (halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, eighths, fifths) with missing labels and three questions. Key on page 2.
  8. Fraction words and review. Label numerator and denominator, write six fractions in words, circle the bigger fraction in six pictured pairs. Key on page 2.

Once these are secure, the next steps are the equivalent fractions worksheets and the mixed numbers worksheets. Pages on adding, subtracting, multiplying, comparing and simplifying fractions are coming to this section next.

How to use these worksheets

Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter. Work through the sheets in order the first time; later, pick the one that matches the gap you see. Keep page 2 for marking, or let older children check their own work and explain any wrong answers.

  • What fraction is shaded? Say the fraction out loud before writing it: "three out of four, three fourths". Saying the denominator first ("out of four") stops children counting only the shaded parts.
  • Shade the fraction. Ask the child to count the parts in the picture and check it matches the bottom number before shading. Any parts can be shaded; the fraction is about how many, not which ones.
  • Halves, thirds and fourths. The key idea of grade 2 fractions: two pieces are only halves if they are the same size. Fold a paper strip unevenly to show it.
  • Fraction of a set. To circle one third of six stars, share the stars into three equal groups; one group is one third. Use counters on the page if it helps.
  • Fraction wall. Fill the missing bricks first (each row is one kind of brick). Then answer the questions by lining up bricks with a ruler. This is the picture behind equivalent fractions.
  • Match the picture to the fraction. Cover the cards and write the fraction under each picture first; then match. A ruler keeps the lines readable.
  • Fractions on a number line. The bottom number is the number of jumps from 0 to 1. Count the jumps out loud before filling the boxes.
  • Fraction words and review. A quick check after the set: if the child can label the two parts, write fractions in words and pick the bigger of two pictured fractions, they are ready for equivalent fractions.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Counting shaded to unshaded. Writing 3/1 for three shaded parts and one unshaded. The bottom number is all the parts, always.
  • Ignoring equal parts. Calling any two pieces "halves". The halves-thirds-fourths sheet is built to catch this.
  • Bigger denominator means bigger fraction. Children reason that 1/8 is more than 1/5 because 8 is more than 5. The fraction wall and the review pictures show the opposite.
  • Misreading number lines. Counting the tick marks instead of the jumps. Have the child hop a finger from 0 and count the hops.

Frequently asked questions

What grade are these fractions worksheets for?

Grades 2 to 5. Halves, thirds and fourths, what is shaded and shade the fraction fit grade 2 (standard 2.G.A.3); fraction of a set, the number lines and the fraction wall are grade 3 (3.NF.A.1 and 3.NF.A.2); the review and the wall questions stretch to grades 4 and 5 as a refresher before adding and comparing fractions.

Do the worksheets include answer keys?

Yes. Every PDF has two pages: the worksheet, then the same page with the answers filled in. On the shading sheets the key shows the shaded pictures; on the wall the missing bricks are printed in color.

In what order should a child learn fractions?

Equal parts and unit fractions (this page), then equivalent fractions and comparing, then mixed numbers and improper fractions, then adding and subtracting with like denominators, then unlike denominators, then multiplying and dividing. Our fractions section follows that order; this page and the equivalent fractions and mixed numbers pages are the first three steps.

Why do the pictures use both pies and bars?

Children who only see pies think fractions are about circles. Bars connect directly to number lines and to the fraction wall, and they make equivalent fractions easy to see. Using both from the start avoids relearning later.

Can I use these in a classroom?

Yes. The PDFs are free for home and classroom use. Print the fraction wall on card and cut it into strips for a reusable class set.

More fraction practice

Continue with the equivalent fractions worksheets (shade to match, missing numerators, simplify) and the mixed numbers worksheets (improper fractions, mixed number number lines). The Montessori fraction circles give hands-on cut-out circles for the same ideas. Comparing whole numbers first? See the greater than and less than worksheets. The division facts worksheets and multiplication worksheets build the fact fluency that later fraction work depends on.
