Sometimes a chart just needs boxes. These six printable sticker charts are exactly that: numbered boxes big enough for a standard sticker, a line for the child's name, a line for what earns a sticker and a line for the reward. Pick the number of boxes to match how long your child can wait: ten for a toddler, twenty or thirty for a preschooler, fifty or a hundred for a school-age child saving toward something bigger. The caterpillar is the same twenty boxes with a face on it. All six print on A4 or US Letter.

What's in this set

  1. 10 sticker chart. Ten very large boxes in two rows of five, the first chart for a two- or three-year-old.
  2. 20 sticker chart. Four rows of five, good for a one-week goal with a sticker per success.
  3. 30 sticker chart. Five rows of six, one per day for a month or one per success over a longer goal.
  4. 50 sticker chart. Ten rows of five for a bigger reward over several weeks.
  5. 100 sticker chart. A ten by ten numbered grid, like a hundreds chart, for a whole term.
  6. Caterpillar sticker chart. A caterpillar with twenty body segments; the stickers run from the head to the tail.

Teaching tips and common mistakes

How to use a sticker chart

  • Name the behavior exactly. Write it on the "I get a sticker for" line in words the child understands: "sitting on the potty", "teeth brushed", "shoes on when asked". One behavior per chart.
  • Give the sticker immediately. Within a minute of the behavior, and let the child stick it on. The delay between doing and sticking is where charts fail with young children.
  • Pick the right size. A chart should fill in about a week for a toddler and two to four weeks for a school-age child. Ten boxes at one sticker a day is a week; a hundred boxes at three a day is a month.
  • Plan the milestones. On the 30, 50 and 100 charts, circle a few boxes (10, 20, 30) before you start and give a small treat at each so the big reward is never out of sight.
  • Choose a reward that is time with you. A trip to the playground, baking together, a later bedtime on Friday. Toys work once; attention works every time.
  • Retire the chart. When the behavior happens without the sticker, stop the chart and say so: "You brush your teeth every night now, we don't need the chart." That is the goal.

Common mistakes

  • Removing stickers. A sticker earned is never taken away. Consequences for other behavior happen elsewhere.
  • A chart too long for the child. If the chart stalls for a week, print a smaller one and finish that instead.
  • Stickers for everything. A child who gets a sticker for breathing stops caring. One chart, one behavior at a time.
  • No stickers in the house. Coloring the box works just as well. Keep a crayon on a string next to the chart.

Frequently asked questions

How many boxes should a sticker chart have?

Enough to fill in about a week for a child under four and two to four weeks for a child of five to eight. That usually means 10 or 20 boxes for toddlers, 20 or 30 for preschoolers and 50 or 100 for school-age children.

What size sticker fits the boxes?

Every box on every chart is at least 14 mm across, so standard star and dot stickers fit. The 10 and 20 charts have boxes over 30 mm, which take the large reward stickers.

Do sticker charts work?

For a specific, short-term behavior in a young child, yes, and quickly. They work less well for vague goals ("being good") or as a permanent system. Use one to start a habit, then retire it.

Can I use a sticker chart for potty training?

Yes, and the 10 or 20 chart is a good plain option. The potty training chart page has charts with the potty steps already drawn on them.

Can a classroom use these?

Yes, free for home and classroom use. The 100 chart doubles as a whole-class reading or kindness tracker, and children can count by tens down the right-hand column as it fills.

More printables for home

The reward chart printables add goals, days of the week and pictures to the same idea, and the chore chart printables track jobs around the house. The 100 sticker chart is also a hundreds chart in disguise: the hundreds chart worksheets turn it into counting practice, and a full reading log is a sticker chart for books.
