Six letter Z tracing worksheets for preschool and kindergarten, all free PDFs. The set teaches capital Z and small z one at a time, then together, then in words. Every letter comes with a plain-English formation cue on the sheet itself ("Little line across the top, slant down to the bottom left, little line across the bottom.") so a parent can say the same words the child hears at school, and every dotted letter sits on three-line handwriting rules: a top line, a dashed middle line and a bottom line. Slanted lines are the last stroke to mature, usually around age four and a half to five, so Z is one of the later letters. If the slants keep coming out vertical, go back to the shape sheets for a week. The pages are laid out so the child traces with a finger first, then a pencil, and ends each sheet by writing the letter with no guide at all.

How to use these worksheets

Print at 100% on US Letter or A4. One sheet a day is plenty for a three- or four-year-old; a kindergartner can do two. Use a thick crayon or a triangular pencil for sheets 1 and 2 and a normal pencil from sheet 3 on.

Say the cue, trace in the air, then on the page. The formation cue on sheets 1 and 2 is meant to be read aloud: "Little line across the top, slant down to the bottom left, little line across the bottom." Have the child write a giant Z in the air with a straight arm, then trace the colored model with a finger, then start the dotted rows.
Start at the top every time. Almost every letter starts at the top. Point at the starting place of the first letter in each row before the pencil touches the paper.
Watch the lines. Capital Z touches the top line and stands on the bottom line; small z sits between the dashed middle line and the bottom line. The dashed middle line is the height of most small letters, so it is the reference for every row on sheet 3.
Find and color. This is a visual discrimination sheet, not a handwriting sheet. Let the child hunt at their own pace and count at the end; the key on page 2 gives the total. Talk about the look-alikes it turned up.
Words. Read the word first, stretch the first sound ("z-z-zip"), then trace it. The small gray model word on the right is for checking, not tracing.
Rainbow letter. Three colors means three passes over the same big letter. The repetition builds the movement into the hand before the smaller rows underneath ask for control.

Common mistakes to watch for

Mixing up z with its look-alikes. z and s: z is three straight lines; s has no straight lines. A backwards z is a normal mistake until about six.
Starting at the bottom. Letters written bottom to top look fine at four and become slow, tiring handwriting at seven. Redirect gently every time: "start at the top".
Lifting the pencil at every dash. The dashes are a guide, not separate marks. Say "keep the pencil moving" and demonstrate one continuous stroke.
Letters floating above the line. Touch the bottom line with a finger and say "this is the floor, every letter stands on the floor".

Frequently asked questions

What age are letter Z tracing worksheets for?

Ages 4 to 6. Z uses slanted lines, which mature later than straight and round strokes, so this letter usually comes after L, T, O and C. A three-year-old can still enjoy the rainbow sheet and the find-and-color sheet.

Which letters should my child learn before and after Z?

Many programs teach letters in stroke families rather than alphabetical order: straight lines first (L, T, I, E, F, H), then curves (C, O, Q, G, S), then slanted lines (A, K, M, N, V, W, X, Y, Z), then letters that mix a line and a curve (B, D, P, R, U, J). In that order Z comes after Y and before B. Letters in the child's own name always come first, whatever the sequence.

Should we start with capital Z or small z?

Capital Z first. The small letter is the same shape made smaller, so the pair sheet is the natural next step.

My child confuses z with s. What helps?

Tracing the two letters on the same day with their cues said aloud, so the difference is in the hand and not only in the eye. Z is three straight lines; s has no straight lines. A backwards z is a normal mistake until about six. The find-and-color sheet deliberately mixes s into the grid for the same reason.
